Their latest estimate for a 1.8 release is the 12th now. Jeb and Notch have also revealed a few other minor things they’ve squeezed in, like an opening animation for chests, a new jungle biome with vines, animals run after being attacked now, and fence gates (discovered in the trailer). And, most importantly of all, pigs have snouts now.

Thank god, finally our long national nightmare is over.
I liked how the snoutless pigs looked…
Indeed. This is yet another example of the dumbing down of minecraft. Pigs with snouts? What’s next Notch? Cows with udders?

He needs to put in some kind of rapid long distance transport system so you can go off an explore and create some kind of network to get you to and from home base.
I was thinking about some kind of keyed teleport system where you could build telepads which would teleport you between each pair.
Minecarts are find for getting around some small area, but they are not practical for long distance travel if you want to connect like 10 points of interest.
This is what portals are for.

If only they weren’t broken. :/
Every time we try to make a sensible portal system, the logic decides to put the returning one on top of the embarking one, even though their hell locations are faaaaaaar apart.
I think Notch has said he intends to revisit the Nether at some point, and hopefully make it suck less.
You can make portals work, but it is annoying. You have to make sure the x,z coordinates in the Nether are as close as possible to the 8x,8z coordinates in the real world, but sometimes it’ll put the other portal far away from where you expected because of blocks in the way or lava or whatever and then you have to tear down the out-of-place portal and rebuild it where it ought to be and so on, and the only way you can practically do it is to abuse debug mode…

Precisely. That does not really yell “fast transport” to me. :/
I would be a-ok with teleporters. Maybe they could use something precious (gold or iron? diamond seems a bit steep) per use or something.
Bah, according to Jeb, 1.9 will also change world generation, so now I’m not sure when I want to start a new world. Hopefully it’s not that long between 1.8 and 1.9.
Better generate and save a copy of all those seeds you like.
1.8 is out!..sort of. There are still some bugs they want to fix before the official release, but they ‘leaked’ the jar file here with a wink-wink-nudge-nudge on Twitter, if anyone wants to get a sneak peek at it.
Just fired up 1.8 and did some running around. The terrain generator is making some really wicked land, and the new lighting is awesome. Still haven’t found much “new” (mine shafts, strongholds, villages, etc) but having a good time looking around.
Definitely buggy, though. The crash-because-you-left-it-on-‘far’ kicked in way earlier than usual, and trying to cook beef in a furnace was an instant crash.
Haven’t played 1.8 yet (I’ll wait for the offical release) but it looks like it’s not really addressing the issue it’s trying to address. If they want to make exploration a bigger part of the game, make biome-specific mobs/plants/etc. with loot drops you can use to craft cool and/or essential stuff. Basically the game needs more mobs and toys. I’m not seeing anything that won’t get old after a couple of days.

Hmm, yeah biome-specific drops would be great. I don’t usually explore very much, but I would if I could find different treasures to bring home. Sounds fun.
Minecraft is still missing more stuff to… you know… craft. I was hoping that 1.8 would add a ton of new stuff to craft besides the whole biome thing (which is nice), seems I’ll have to either wait for another update further down the line or just go with mods.
Adding to the above: an XP system is a terrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrible decision. Like, cartoonishly stupid. If you want people to augment their abilities, make them craft shit that does that - like Monster Hunter or whatever. Make a bedazzler gun http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amicrtFYgVQ that gives you magic powers like the ability to walk on clouds or whatever the fuck.
The game runs like complete shit after that “update”.
It’s a good thing he hasn’t actually released it then, a beta patch for a game still in beta… hmmm.
