I’m not really liking the new terrain generator. It’s still too random for my liking, with biomes splattered together. I much prefer the terrain generator from Infdev. That would generate vast islands to explore, not a constant stream of land dotted with ponds. I do like the new terrain features and lighting system.
I stumbled across an abandoned mine, when I jumped into a chasm to escape some mobs. So far seems like it could be a lot of fun to explore. I didn’t get very far because of the nasty memory leak, but I did like what little I did see.

So I tried the 1.8 pre-release. Digging randomly down, I came across…an abandoned mine. Wooden trestles, rails, the whole bit. Very interesting.
unfortunately, the crash-on-using-furnaces bug makes me think i’ll just wait for the real release.
The biomes are supposed to be much larger in 1.8, and some of the ocean ones are just crazy. Starting with the seed ‘Tierney’ that another forum recommended, I headed NW for around 3000 blocks and saw nothing but the occasional tiny little island.

I’ll probably keep waiting until 1.9, because 1.9 adding more to the worldbuilder and making the XP system supposedly do something and adding NPCs to the NPC villages seems kinda important.
If we’re getting experience points, does that mean we’ll soon also have trader NPCs and an actual currency?

Might as well just wait for the final version then.

It was my understanding that the adventure update was the last content update to Minecraft to the launch, so I wouldn’t think final version would be really any different.

I always considered the craft part of Minecraft referred not to the proper crafting system, but to the stuff you craft placing blocks. You know: huge statues, buildings, engineering works in the terrain, etc.
I can see your point; even so, I tend to fall into the whole “Oh yeah, I’m gonna build a big something”, play it compulsively for a day then get bored because what I really want, after building that big thingie, is to mine stuff and craft stuff.

No 1.8 release today after all, too many bugs have turned up from the leaked version. From Jeb’s twitter, this is what they’re working on:
- SSP chunk memory leak
- Mineshaft density (half now)
- Increased stronghold count to 3 per map instead of one
- Furnace tile entity crash
- Crafting bench ghost items
- Vines (and leaves) crash in nether
- Use item animation in SMP (blocking and eating)
- Blocking in SMP
- Sprinting with right-click or sneaking
- Added some blocks to creative mode
- Fixed dropping items
- Nothing can be eaten in creative mode
- Enderman client-side problems
- Chicken and cow drop burned food
- Squids drop exp
- 1.7 worlds should get structures
- Farmlands rejecting melon and pumpkin seeds
- Bonemeal on melons and pumpkins
- Bonemeal on mushroom only works on dirt or grass
- Added item drops for cracked and mossy smooth stone brick
- Adjusted fog strength at low positions
I think I’m still going to wait until 1.9 to start a new ‘serious’ world, since there are still biome changes to come in 1.9 and I’m guessing that NPCs might not get retroactively placed in pregenned villages. It’s still kinda fun to just mess around in 1.8, though.

I tried firing up Minecraft last night for the first time in a long time. After it updated and I started a new world, the game constantly froze for about a second every ten seconds or so, no matter what I was doing. Grr.

Yes the system is broken. Even if it wasn’t Id still want to create teleports to and from specific spots. Also mining obsidian is unreasonably slow, especially if you want to create a large network of teleport portholes. I just want a better system.

I would really love a teleporter system too, even if it makes me do something crazy like craft wires and then lay in a path from one teleporter to another. I already have the tunnels, it just takes too long to walk down them.

I’d like to introduce you both into the Industrialcraft mod, it has teleporters, but crazy power requirements, so you’d need a whole infrastructure of transformers, generators and cables to make it all work, it’s very time consuming but I love that mod.

Yeah, I got overwhelmed by just the list of new stuff in that. Too much.

Yeah, I typically use IC. Its some of the kinds of things I wish Notch would build into the base mine-craft game. Teleporters shouldn’t be so difficult to make. The idea is to have a vast, but well-connected world. Its better then nothing though.
My ideal is that you build a keyed node in some home base, then go off and explore somewhere far away, somewhere interesting, and build the 2nd keyed node and now you connected to home base.

Heh. This is cool - I found a tree in the early 1.8 build that seems to be on the edge of several different biomes:

Yeah, this would be perfect. I don’t really need them to be all over the place, but I do tend to go explore and build mini-lairs … and typically lose interest in the previous one since I’d have to connect them somehow, where that effort (tunnel, elevated road, rail) could be going to enhancing the actual lair. So I just start off with a new one and … repeat.
If I could just plop down a “node key” as you say (let’s say um, you could drop one if the game detected a bed, a workbench and enough stored materials in one location - or heck, even if it detected a contiguous structure and you fed in some diamonds or something - that would be dandy.

My original idea was that the corners of the gate would be the node key. IE 2 wood blocks on top and two cobble stones on bottom would teleport to and from a gate with the same block arrangement. However, that is still a lot of obsidian to get.
Another idea was a pad, with an obsidian as the center block with the combination being done in a ring around it, starting from the block north of the center block. However, how do you find north underground? I suppose you could use that mode that lets you see world coordinates.
Any mod makers out there looking for ideas? Hint Hint.
