Compass? =)
My idea for the teleporter was to have a key block type in each pad, then you could "use: a matching block of that type like a coinslot to teleport from any pad, to any pad. As long as every pad had used a unique block for its signature…

Love (Eskil Steenberg’s game) had a system for this from the beginning. He had an interface you could target in the game that could be typed directly to, and it accepted addresses in the familiar xx.xx.xx format. Any two telepads, radios, or in-visual-range pulley-lines would connect when you typed the addresses of each other in.
The mechanisms in that game worked really nicely; I’d still be playing if it was single player and unpaid. :P

You can actually tell which way is north when underground based on the markings on the textures of stone, cobblestone, etc. I can never remember what the thing you’re supposed to look for is, though… (Check on a block on the surface when the directions are known, I guess.)
@Delta: what graphic pack are you using, the colours look really vibrant.
I haven’t played in ages, used to play with the Painterly Pack + Airship mod (the one where you can craft and fly balloons).

Can anyone explain what “* Increased stronghold count to 3 per map instead of one” means? Isn’t the map infinite-ish? Does ‘map’ here mean ‘region’?

I saw that too, and figured it meant an area the size of one of the little craftable maps maybe?
Well I finally succumbed and bought this. Really looking forward to just tooling around, and I imagine my kids will love it.

In the current 1.8 prerelease code, it does indeed only generate one stronghold per world; once it’s placed it will never generate another one again, no matter how many new chunks you generate. That was widely seen as unfair since it’s pretty unlikely you’d happen to just stumble across that one particular spot while exploring underground. That comment about increasing it to 3 is a bit out of date though, as Jeb agreed with a Twitter comment that it should be just as infinite as the map (probably turning it into just a really, really low chance per region).

Nitpick: Regions are rather large, so I would expect a chance greater than 1 per region.
Well, any given map (world) isn’t infinite though the maximum size is 1.8 times the surface area of the Earth so it’s huuuuge; that said, on 1.8 it was only generating a stronghold per world and it was increased to 3; given the size of a world it can be nearly impossible to find any of them.

It’s Frenden’s Texture Pack, which for me is so perfectly tuned to the gameplay that it almost is Minecraft. Without Frenden, I find the game is almost unplayable.
Anyone know where we can find the updated ‘leaked’ 1.8 build?
Jeb said he would at the very least release an update to the preview today (if 1.8 itself doesn’t come out). But he hasn’t announced its release on Twitter. I don’t think the update is out yet: http://twitter.com/#!/jeb_

What part of “infinite-ish” means “infinite”?
What part of answering your question about strongholds didn’t you get?
I was trying to put into perspective the scale of the game so you can get the whole “3 strongholds per world” and that map = world and not region but it seems you prefer to be a tit and troll me.

Notch should rewrite the coordinates to use the java class BIGNUM, to make the size of the map really infinite, with not other limits than practical limits of memory and bandwidth.

Doesn’t the compass point toward your spawn opposed to true north?
Looks like the official 1.8 won’t be out today yet. So we get another pre-release:

Yes, it does. Does anyone else besides me find that super annoying? Maybe it could be a toggle so it can operate in one of the two modes.
Yeah it’s extraordinarily annoying. Even worse, I would swear that the it used to be that resetting your spawn point with a bed also reset your compass but that no longer seems to be true.
Edit: All it would take would be two arrows on the compass. Red points north, blue points home. Purple means second star to the left and straight on till morning.
