I started a test 1.8 pre-release server just to look around and it seems like we have a nice seed. It starts with rolling hills. But there are mountains, lakes, a floating island and a network of caverns to the left of the spawn. I also spotted some desert. If anyone wants to have a bit of exploring fun before the release, hit: minecraft-ha.dnsalias.com
To do this, you must be using the pre-release 2 jar mentioned above.
Please, also note that that’s hosted on my desktop and I’m not aiming to create an official Qt3 server or have it running 24/7. But if you are curious, feel free to check it out.

Sun is your second compass. The fact it’s not always visible is a feature, not a bug. :P

I’d really like a pup tent for exploring the over-world even if it was expensive to make. Setting up a little hidey-hole every night gets annoying. I know the moon mod has one, maybe another mod has it.
Also, some kind of cheap directional marker block, ideally that I can make out of cobblestone or dirt (mud arrow?) so I don’t have to take up an inventory space and don’t have to head home if I run out of them. Right now wood and food are the only real impediments to infinite digging.
I’d love to see a craftable, portable tent/shelter.

I just make my own markers using dirt/cobble/etc. Different shapes for different meanings.
At least food is now stack-able so you can just stock up for your long trip underground. :)

In case anyone didn’t know, clouds travel south to north.

Notch actually recently clarified things (and by ‘clarified’ I mean ‘confused’) by saying that the sun rises in the north, which means that clouds actually travel westward.
I still think of things in the ‘old’ way though, clouds going north like you said.
(Edit: Then again, he may have been joking, given the context, but wikis and such have taken him seriously and adopted the new directions.)
1.8 is out now. Update your client and server, start that new world and enjoy!
Personally, I’m suffering from wild server anguish. Do I go looking for Endermen or do I build?

I wonder if that Airplanes mod is still around. I always wanted to build a sweet airbase but couldn’t realize half of my crazy ideas until pistons were added.

I played a bit in creative mode and flew around. Wow! The biomes are way better.
I found an alpine forest and a swamp and a big ocean with cool little islands, and lots of great cliffs. The pine trees look really good, and I like how the light color changes at night. I was kind of meh on the previous biomes, but I like these a lot! The terrain overall was just a lot more interesting, though canyons did appear in odd places.

One thing to watch out for is that there are no more snow biomes in 1.8. They’ve apparently been converting the biome code to a new architecture and couldn’t get the snow ones done in time for 1.8, so it might not get in until 1.9.
And the current rumour is that 1.9 will be released at Minecon, mid-November.

Notch needs to totally fuck with people and sneak in an update that introduces wind patterns that gently shift the direction of cloud flow.
I was just thinking about that yesterday. It’d be hilarious.

I found an Ender Pearl last night. I don’t remember even seeing an Ender Man since updating and the pearl wasn’t near water, so it must have been sunlight.

So how exactly do you heal in 1.8? Apparently pork and chicken are not how.
You heal by keeping your hunger meter full, and you will regain hearts over time.
I like the empty villages. I feel like someone who’s walked into a place where others have been and are now gone…make the game a little creepier.

You automatically heal over time if your hunger bar is near-full (I think you can have one gone and still heal), but otherwise no, there aren’t any more insta-heal items.

Oh and for those who want pup tents for the night, try using bone mean and red mushrooms. You can make a pretty decent little structure out of them.

You can grow giant mushrooms and fashion them into emergency shelters with a bit of work.

Unplayably slow for me now :/
