Slowdown is driving me crazy. It starts out fine on max settings, for a couple of minutes, then just gets slower and slower and slooower. Like it’s a memory leak or something.

Curiosity got the better of me, I downloaded, created a world (blasphemy was my seed and it’s pretty damn good)

However, I can’t eat. I killed cows and cooked a few steaks, but right mouse doesn’t do anything. It just swings the steak. I couldn’t find any other food besides cows, had to turn it to peaceful just so I wouldn’t die, but it’s real annoying to get the “ooh” like you’re taking damage all the time.

Also, I went through 2 hoes and didn’t get a single seed. I wanted to plant some wheat.

It’s been months & months since I’ve played. I have a feeling the rules have changed or I’m missing something really stupid.

Right-click swings the food, holding right-click eats. As for seeds, I had some memory too about using hoes on soil, but apparently you’re just supposed to break tall grass for them to drop.

Tried the new update and using the 64bit java. Everything ran pretty fast and smooth (it also did with the old one)… Had never used a custom seed value before, so of course, I picked AMiGA as the seed value.

The landscape that met me was unlike any I had seen previously from Minecraft (albeit, I hadn’t made a new world since 1.7.x client). It felt like my seed value should have been Treasure Island Dizzy more than Amiga, as I found myself on top of a tall but very steep mountain, covered with flowers … (and cows), with water in every direction almost as far as the eyes could see (or the draw range). And worst of all, there was not a single tree in sight. After bravely descending (and losing some hp in the process) I finally caught a glimmer of hope at the edge of my spawning prison… in the distance I could see what looked like another island, and even more encouraging, the outlines of something that looked like a tree. Packing up my posessions, which at that point consisted of 20 blocks of dirt and some flowers, I swam and swam and swam and swam… noticing that, as I sank deeper into the abyss, it got darker and darker, and I could not discern the bottom. Luckily I remembered to press spacebar to gain buoyancy and eventually found myself on my new island paradise…

My earlier impression that what I saw in the distance was a tree proved correct. Although, for some reason, it was the ONLY tree I could see.

I am now on day 3 on my new island. Have yet to see any villagers or those nasty new angel-creeps. I did notice that I somehow got poisoned(?) while fighting the spiders, as my health kept dropping for no apparent reason. I managed to cook a piece of pork to negate the effects (who knew pork could do this) of the poison however, so at least I did not die. Now that I think about it, death would be really really bad, since my spawn point is so far away. I wonder if I’ll remember how to make a bed - or was that in terraria.

On the create world screen there is a new option, “World Type: Normal” but I can’t seem to fiddle with it… any idea if soon we will have water/island worlds, fully desert worlds, etc?

I played this World till LATE last night. The caverns go all the way to the lowest depths. I went so deep I got lost and couldn’t find my way back up. Eventually I fell in some Lava and died. Most fun I’d had in quite a while.

I started Nightfall to check it out too. So far it’s pretty good. A perfect little starting island.

“village” has a number of caverns near the start that are sufficiently large that there is fog in the caverns going off into the distance.

They’re like canyons, but underground.

I like the new “food” dynamic. It adds tension after the first day jitters are over.

Err, I can’t starve to death, right?

You can if the difficulty is on Hard. Otherwise, on normal, your health drops until you have half a heart left, and on easy it stops at five hearts.

I’m liking the hunger mechanic overall. You can’t let yourself get too in over your head, and need a safe spot to recover in, but you’re no longer forced back to the surface as soon as you get in a couple unlucky fights and have to use up all your food.

I think it’s just speculation at this stage, but back in the pre-Alpha days you could select between a number of different world themes and types, and he might be preparing to bring something like that back. People have been requesting things like limited-size maps, single-island worlds, etc., so those could be the kinds of things you could choose.

Here’s my seed, the mountain top in a range between swamp and forest. I really like the combination of mountain and forest and water:

In my version all I’ve done is connect the two closest mountains and set up nice protected balconies jutting from every side. It just has nice views. Oh, and cover the tops in trees of course.

The giant mushrooms make me feel like I’m in a Vaughn Bode comic.

Needs buxom fairies for the full effect, though.

The new terrain generator really demonstrates what is in my mind Minecraft’s greatest attribute: the use of vertical space. Very few games (none that I can think of) give you the kind of huge mountains and deep canyons that Minecraft offers. The first time I came across a crevasse that cut really really deep underground I was floored.

i like the yellow flickering light the torches give off now

Holding RMB to actually eat food threw me off for a little while, but ultimately the new eating and health system makes the world feel even more like… I’m in a world.

If you’re still getting Java out of memory errors, you can try this:

[ul]
[li]Go to the folder container Minecraft.exe[/li][li]Create a text file with the contents:[/li][/ul]

java -version
java -Xmx2048M -Xms2048M -jar Minecraft.exe

[ul]
[li]Save the file and rename it to “MinecraftTest.bat”.[/li][li]Run MinecraftTest.bat[/li][li]This should pop up 2 windows: Console and Minecraft.[/li][li]If this doesn’t work, check the Task Manager while Minecraft is running and figure out how much memory it’s using, then modify -Xmx in MinecraftTest.bat to accomodate it.[/li][li]Also, check the console to make sure that you’re running 64-bit Java (output of “java -version”). If not, edit MinecraftTest.bat and replace “java” with the full path to the 64-bit Java that you downloaded.[/li][/ul]
Note: The “2048M” assumes that you have enough RAM to allocate 2GB to Minecraft.

-Xmx : max memory allocated (2048M = 2048 MB = 2 GB)
-Xms : initial memory allocated

No “in a world”, Pogo.

waits to see if anyone gets the reference

CHICKENS!

One of the downsides of the new animal spawn code is that they can collect in little niches like this and then you’re wandering around, wondering where they all disappeared to. You also only see certain types in certain biomes, so it took forever for me to find any sheep in one of the worlds I tested.
