A giant complex of abandoned mine shafts just off the spawn island.

He needs to be more generous with the auto-healing. I think having auto-healing enabled when you are half and even 1/4 full would be more reasonable.

That sounds pretty awesome. I went down under the island for a bit but came upon a big open cave that had ocean water pouring through it. I then realized I had no bow and barely any arrows so I kinda changed up and went exploring by boat to find chickens and more food since my farm is still underdeveloped.

edit: I loaded up MCEdit and yeah that’s a pretty big complex, though there’s an even bigger one up north where I’m exploring apparently. New worldgen is pretty tough to understand using MCEdit, it’s much more chaotic than before.

BTW, I don’t think there are any Notch fanboys on this forum. Even people who love the game for what it is (including myself) understand the content release problems.

The stability problems seem to be related to memory issues, and some people report success using the 64-bit Java runtime, or launching it with parameters that specify a larger memory size for the VM. But others are still having trouble even with that, so there are probably a few different causes; Notch noted that he fixed at least one crash bug this morning.

I’m not too worried about the stability issues like that right now since it’s not so bad that they couldn’t be resolved with a good stretch of feature-freeze-and-debug time. No, I think Notch’s biggest problem so far has been one of managing expectations and the overall direction of the game. He’s made so many offhanded comments about what he wants to do or what he thinks of fans’ ideas or what he’s rejected that it’s hard to get a coherent overall picture, and so much of it is buried in tweets or interviews that it’s hard to confirm what you vaguely remember he might or might not have said, and as a result every once in a while you get someone who rages “DAMMIT NOTCH WHERE’S MY GEM-ENCHANTED DRAGON FURSUIT THAT YOU PROMISED” and hell, for all I know he really did…

I actually fixed my crash/memory problems by lowering the amount of memory the java VM is allowed to use - I think the problem people are seeing is overallocation, not under.

Tried this but didn’t work for me. (set to -Xmx1024M)

I think that my world is basically just corrupted at this point sadly.

There’s a large memory leak somewhere. Unfortunately I only have 2GB of ram and instead of crashing Minecraft just grinds to halt thrashing the hard drive. It’s been like this for a long time, mods that increase the view make it a lot worse.

This is not a memory leak. This means that once minecraft is set to use 2GB, the system will try to move stuff to the disc. It judges badly what to move to the disc, however. This results in the disc thrashing. set minecraft to use only 1GB or buy more Ram. It’s dirt cheap these days.

So the spouse and I just started up a new world this weekend to try out 1.8 for the first time, inviting a couple of friends. So far we’re really enjoying it. We all went in different directions from the spawn in search of villages, and we all found some, in varying degrees of size. I was pretty happy with mine, so I decided to tidy it up and move in.

I found a significant cavern system right underneath the town with an abandoned mine that seems to go on forever. I’m now telling myself that my village is an old mining town. ;) The mines are amazing, with chests everywhere, and being able to scavenge the rail track is handy. Iron is definitely in great abundance, but it still adds up quickly if you’re trying to build a significant rail system. It seems like the spawn rate of gold is increased as well, which I assume is because it’s somewhat useful now (for powered rails).

The endermen are pretty creepy, but not hard to kill… I decided to try to take one on, expecting it to be harder than other mobs for some reason (don’t know why I thought that) but it went down in two hits (with a diamond sword) just like normal mobs. I even looked directly at one one to try and agitate it and nothing happened… not sure why. I had my crosshair directly on it.

They’re fascinating to watch though, watching them pick up blocks and put them down elsewhere. On several occasions I’ve had to repair buildings in town because they were mysteriously missing blocks when dawn came. ;)

One question… has anyone found any red flowers in their worlds? We’ve explored a great deal, and been through many different biomes, and while yellow flowers seem to be in abundance, we realized that we hadn’t seen a single red flower. Have they been removed, or is it a bug? Or have we just been really unlucky and not finding any? I don’t know of another way to make red dye, unless there’s something else that’s been added that we haven’t found yet. (which is possible)

No it’s caused by a memory leak. As in Minecraft gobbles up more and more memory as time goes on. It’s already set at 1GB.

I saw two red flowers on the island world. Just two, though. Definitely seeing more yellow flowers than red.

Red flowers were always much harder to find, but they do seem to be almost nonexistent in new worlds. Can you still get a bunch by using bonemeal on grass though?

I’m wondering if it’s specific maps that do this or some other weird thing because I’ve not ever had the game crash on me or start slowing down after playing for a while. I’m at a fairly modest 4GB, so nothing special. Java is set to whatever the default is, which I think is 1024. I even run high res texture packs.

It depends heavily on the view distance. The default ‘Far’ crashes way more often than if you bump it down to ‘Normal’, though there are undoubtedly other factors as well.

I don’t ever crash. What’s the deal with that?

I tried 1024M, 1500M, etc and they all crashed after a few minutes.

Just set it down this week to 800M in my batch file - and now I can run for hours (all video options set to far/highest).

Running through the browser helps for me. It still starts chugging after a while, but it doesn’t crash every 5 minutes like the client does.

Definitely, I think it’s something to do with loading/unloading of chunks. I always run in to problems when exploring and moving around the map a lot. Some maps are worse than others. My current map is fairly bad, Minecraft needs to be restarted every 20mins or so.

From Notch’s Twitter:

By the way, I will nerf the endermen block carrying. It was a horrible idea.

It was a neat effect, but yeah, people aren’t too happy with them messing up redstone circuits, monster spawners, containment structures, railways, etc…

I have yet to have an Enderman cause an actual problem, but it IS kinda weird walking through the forest during the day and finding trees with missing stumps because they hauled off with them.
