I’ve been looking for seeds in this thread, since this is the only place I discuss Minecraft and find it cool to read about what other people are doing in the same world I have running.

GuildBoss already has a 1.9 preview video up here, with the new Nether stuff up front. (Accordion Pokemon!)
I think the missing sounds on the new stuff are just because they’re kept outside the jar file, so we’ll probably only get them with the full update.
For anyone who wants to see a stronghold, abandoned mine and NPC village, an interesting seed I found on the Minecraft forums is -341414797482072298. Go to coordinates X: -261 & Z: 718 then dig down. You will end up in the library room of a stronghold. There is also an NPC town near these coordinates. I’ve found a couple chests in random rooms and a dungeon with a couple more chests while searching the stronghold, and there are all sorts of abandoned mineshafts running through and under the stronghold.

I haven’t seen any strongholds yet, but apparently some guy on the Minecraft forums has written some java code that calculates stronghold locations based on the map seed.
I haven’t tested it (since I wouldn’t know what to do with that code, hehe) but several people in that thread gave their seed, the OP gave them their stronghold coords, and they appear to be accurate.
I expect there will be stronghold locating mods available shortly.
EDIT: Oh, I just realized he apparently released a small app that you can just input your seed and it gives you your coords. I can’t decide if I want to use it… I like to explore and find stuff for myself, but these strongholds are so rare…

If you want to see the new mushroom biome and mooshrooms in 1.9, try the seed 5630765669477878057 and swim to around x:50,z:160. (Courtesy of Honeydew)
Or if rather watch than try yourself, go here and watch the latest 4-5 clips:

I tried my hand at some mushroom housing, but unfortunately mushrooms will not grow if they end up touching a block of any kind (that I could test).
They also randomize from 3 heights, including the brown mushroom, so that porch of mine actually took like 5 attempts, I had to chop down the mushroom each time, and I also had to dig out a hole to get it that low in the first place, and the hole had to be of the same size as the top of the mushroom itself.
Insult to injury is of course the fact that the space is so small within the mushrooms that it’s just annoying to even go in there.

Has anyone written up a changelog for 1.9? I can’t watch videos at work.

I built myself a mushroom village as well, on an island in the middle of the ocean. I tried out a few different layouts, but it’s true that they just aren’t big enough in general to make “comfortable” housing. Still, it’s fun trying anyway. Here are some pics:
Typical single red mushroom house:
A “doublewide”… I found using white wool to connect red mushrooms worked well, since they have the red dots. I’d would have preferred to use red wool, except I still haven’t seen a single red flower in my world anywhere:
A bit of a tower I created, by planting three mushrooms all on top of each other:
Finally, a couple of brown mushroom canopies for the blacksmith and the “garden center”:
And a link to the last one since you can’t put more than 5 images in a message.
The absolute worst part of building a mushroom village in survival mode is that if a creeper blows one up, you can’t repair it, since you can’t place blocks with the mushroom texture. You have to start all over again. I thought I had done well in lighting up my entire island (it’s not very big) yet I still get monster spawns at night. I’ve tried to watch where they spawn and place torches when I notice them, but they still seem to be coming from somewhere.
The new world gen doesn’t cease to amaze me; just created a new world, spawned on a small island without trees so I had to swim towards the closest island that had trees, crafted a boat and kept heading north until I saw some elevated land.
It sure feels more like a “natural” world now than just a bunch of biomes thrown together; and i’ve yet to find snow, maybe I’ll keep heading north.

snow doesn’t exist in 1.8x It’s fixed for 1.9 pre release though.

This seed still works with 1.9, though the hole in the swamp is now part of a ravine.
FYI, there’s also a dungeon on the surface in the desert with 2 chests that can give you a nice head start for the 404-type challenge. I’m writing up some rules for a pair of challenges, in fact. One will be a 404-style where you go in and stay and survive as long as you can. The other will be a “collection” challenge where you grab as much ore and rail and get back out before starving to death (can only eat what you bring down with you).
For Mushroom Biome, use the seed “lost”.
According to a twitter post by Jeb (I think), C418 will be providing new monster audio.
Crap.
Oh well, time to shelve Minecraft until 1.9 is out and texture packs are updated.

Hahah… So many years since I’ve seen that building. Ducktales wohoo!
Nice work.
I loaded this up again (1.8) while waiting for Alpha Protocol to download. Random map resulted in small islands with only a couple trees on them. Haven’t done much exploring but so far the only other land is more small islands.
seed: -500098733307365439
coords so I don’t forget where I was: -200, -65
Edit: No cows, chickens, dogs, or pigs on any of these islands, either.
