Sorry for posting screenshots?

He could simply have some kind of .ini file in the texture pack that says, I am a 32 x 32 texture pack so that minecraft.jar will know to be in 32 x 32 mode without patching it. That way you can flip between texture packs and not really care what patched version of minecraft you are running.

Think he meant you could resize them, or even link ;)

The capacity of people to take exactly the wrong message from fairly explicit rants is a recurring source of despair for me.

/end drama queen mode

You might want to resize your images to say 1000 pixels wide. Use something like XnView. I think they broke the forum. :)

Enchanted armour, for when you want to feel oh-so-pretty. (Apparently it’s a shader effect that looks better in motion.)

UPDATE : So the tips in this thread seem to have solved the memory limit issues. QT3 to the rescue yet again, this is why I love this place.

I have to admit I did not get the love for this game until I watched my son playing for a bit, showing off his house he’d built, then his mine (with tracks and carts and stuff). He played pretty much all weekend when he wasn’t doing homework or at football or playing outside with his friends. He loves it. He asked me to try it out last night after he went to bed just to see what I thought.

Holy shit, totally addicting. I’m not even to the point where I’m building shit yet other than the little stone cave I created just to stay alive at night. I have my workbench, furnace and bed in there, and am still having fun just exploring, collecting resources (I scored coal in a huge vein right near my hideout) and slaying the occasional monster and lots of farm animals. I’m trying to put together some leather armor, and I’m trying to stockpile some food so I can spend time prospecting for metal ores. Wow, when I type that it sounds like work, but it’s actually fun so far.

While the graphics are charming in a retro sort of way I can’t believe the no developer/publisher has dialed into the fact that this is so addicting and cranked out a far prettier knockoff of the game. If you could do all this in a world as beautiful as Turbine’s LORTO setting it would be damn near perfect.

I haven’t even loaded any mods for my son yet, though he’s seen them on the site and will want them eventually. Any recommendations on “must-have” mods and how to install them?

What’s that he’s standing in front of? Looks like a book stand.

That’s the thing that enchants the items. He calls it an enchantment table. It essentially is a book stand.

Other than a texture pack, mods are kind of an annoyance for new players.

I’d love a mod that makes items laying on the ground (skeleton arrows, etc) render out just a bit farther than 10 feet from the player.

The easiest to install would probably be the Yogbox, which is actually a compilation of a bunch of popular mods. The massive changes can be a bit overwhelming though, if you’re new to the game.

You’d also quickly run into the version dependency problem, as mods have to be rebuilt and reinstalled for each Minecraft update. The Yogbox currently works with 1.8.1, but when 1.9 comes out you’d have to avoid updating and wait for a new version of Yogbox, or start a new plain world. You generally can’t remove mods and continue using a world previously used with mods (pedantic clarification: the problem is with mods that alter the world by adding new items; mods that don’t, like inventory shortcuts or a minimap can be removed safely).

The mod versioning problem is kind of annoying, and there are plans to open up the Minecraft source that should help make them less version-dependent.

Speaking of texture packs, any suggestions for good ones that are 1.9 compatible? I’m back to using the default textures but would prefer something a little higher-res. The inevitable issue for me is that every pack always seems to contain a few textures that just look off. At one point RobotPants and I were cobbling together textures from a number of packs but that can get a bit cumbersome.

I may end up doing that again, though, if I can find a pack that works as a solid baseline. I am currently perusing the old standby texture pack thread in the official forum.

In other Minecraft news, Notch has revealed baby animals. Freaky-looking baby pig and less freaky baby cow seen here.

I still like Quandary a lot, though he hasn’t updated it for 1.9 yet.

I use NinjaDoku mostly these days. Glimmar’s Steampunk pack is pretty neat too, but not quite what I want for most of my stuff.

I’m quite fond of Rei’s MiniMap, very handy for marking waypoints and finding your way home again.

I was using Quandary, though I loved Doku and well and I think I’ll be using that again.

Have to use the quick HD patcher that is linked there though.

After perusing the official thread and the suggestions here, I’m going to try out:

Quandry (16x16) 1.8
Grebzcraft (32x32) 1.9 prerelease 2
Faithful (32x32) 1.9 prerelease
JohnSmith Texture Pack V8.1 (32x32) 1.8
HerrSommer 1.9 - v3 (64x64) 1.9 prerelease 2

And as noted, the HD packs require the latest version of MC Patcher.

The Sphax PureBDCraft texture pack is just about perfect, in my opinion, and it appears to be updated for 1.9pre2.

Whoa, that looks terrific. I really love the 4kids texture pack, and this one looks like it could be even better. Thanks, will be trying that very soon.
