Hrm… I want that water shaders mod but it looks like it’s on hold until final release.
That Sphax pack is really good, but I don’t like the UI for it at all.

Figured out how to change the colour of grass. No more of that hideous blue grass:

1.9pre3 is now up here (server file here). Includes the potion system, baby animals, and bits of the enchanting system but it’s still a work in progress.
Is there a release date for the full 1.9?
Whenever they decide to stop cramming new stuff into it! The only real known hard date is the 18th, when they intend to enter feature freeze and just focus on bug fixes and optimization until release. There’s also supposed to be a 1.10 with the rest of the adventure stuff that hasn’t made it into 1.9 (NPCs actually doing something is the big one), so time’s running short…
More mobs pls :)
Big ones.
No sense having buffs unless I need them, right?
This game may possibly be too awesome. My backlog, which I was making decent progress on mere days ago, now sits untouched again as I’m spending my gaming time late nights building a modest little stone keep and excavating an ever-deepening mine system (already hit and cleared two spider dungeons, those chests are nice!). Part of me recognizes that it’s a complete waste of time, who’s going to see these creations other than me and my son, but a bigger part of me is having a ton of fun regardless. It’s also been cool to see my son’s creations in the game. His house dwarfs my own, and he built a redstone mine cart roller coaster that he showed off last night which was incredibly impressive.
For as simple as the overall concept is, this game is horrifically addicting.
That’s why you do it on a multiplayer server! (Though people are a bit reluctant to start one right now with the rapid changes going on. I think worldgen is close to being stabilized again, though.)
Any suggestions on stable and FREE multiplayer servers?
Also, I see a lot of servers on the Minecraft website lists show they use something called Bukkit. Is that something I need to download and install or is it resident at the server level?
If you want a sever just for your and your son, just set one up on your own computer and have the two of you connect to it. That’s how I have one set up for my kids and I. Download the server files from the minecraft site and look up the how to set up a minecraft server videos on youtube by paulsauresjr (aka GuildBoss).
Bukkit is a server that makes it easier to run mods. You don’t need to do anything.
Thanks for the plug (though it’s “paulsoaresjr”)! The video is a bit dated but the process is the same.
Slainte Mhath, if you need further help, just ask here.
I had no idea GuildBoss was paulsoaresjr. I’m assuming either Portuguese or Brazillian ancestry with that name :D
Bah sorry GuildBoss, I always mess that up =P
Dragons! Rumoured to be part of a sky dimension that’s only partially implemented in the latest prerelease (the portal blocks are in, but can’t be activated).
Seems like Notch is trying to cram as many features as he can in at the last minute before the feature freeze hits, and then he can use the debugging time to finish implementing them properly. A common enough development trick, but it can bite you in the ass if there’s not enough time left and you’re left with a bunch of buggy, half-baked features… (Though at least with Minecraft there’ll still be continued development past the ‘final’ release.)

I run my own Minecraft server instead of doing single player worlds.
That way I can always access it from whatever computer I’m using.
My recommended configuration is:
SimpleServer
This is a wrapper for Minecraft that provides extra functionality such as teleporting, automated world backups and a whole lot more.
Since it’s a wrapper it doesn’t modify Minecraft in any way - sweet!
Craftbukkit
If you’re feeling adventurous then you can also add CraftBukkit to SimpleServer. This will allow you to pick and choose mods to add to your server from a huge repository.
Personally I just run a small mod that protects my world from Creepers and Endermen world damage.
I’ve been working on building my base/fortress on and off for the last couple of months. Bits and pieces here and there.
I’ll post some screenshots when I get back from work :)
EDIT: For fucks sake, I still can’t post links - I need 2 more posts before I hit my 50 mark.
You can get one closer by answering my question!
Do you run your MC server on a separate machine than the one you typically play on? Or to put it somewhat differently, is it practical to run a MC dedicated server and play the game on the same PC?
Put two dummy posts in this thread and then edit them to add in pictures.
For my server, I run and play on my machine and the kids join up through the net. Never had any performance issues running both.
