The creeper delay may indeed be a server latency issue. I tend to play almost exclusively online these days so I’ve probably forgotten that response in single player is generally more crisp overall.
And yes, our island is well-lit. :P
I like the idea of crafting items (beyond torches) for monster-free areas. They could even add a specific monster that could disable the items but was otherwise harmless to keep you on your toes (sort of like a more purposeful enderman, though maybe it would end up as annoying as they are now).

I was thinking today about the issue of monsters spawning indoors, and how people get frustrated with it. I think you could make the current mechanic more enjoyable just by adding more feedback.
I’m thinking of some kind of ‘warp residue’ mark that gets left on the ground when a monster spawns. You only really want this happening indoors, not when a monster spawns naturally in an untouched world, so it could be limited to when a monster spawns in a light level above that of natural moonlight. So basically near a torch, but not close enough to prevent spawning.
So it serves two purposes. It highlights the gaps in your light coverage when you’re trying to make an area safe. And it tries to explain why monsters are appearing inside your house a little better - there is now evidence they are teleporting in through magical means.
My issue isn’t that I don’t know how they are appearing though, really – I can kinda sorta figure out where they are spawning (generally, it’s in the middle of the room farthest from all the torches). My problem is that they are spawning at all. It’s especially annoying since if you put your lights on a wall, they actually become LESS effective than if you put them on the floor. :P
Perhaps the game needs “indoor/outdoor/cave” location detection, and to change light thresholds appropriately.
Yeah, purely from an aesthetics point of view, the torches-everywhere thing is annoying. It’s dumb to build a house and have to cover the roof with torches just to keep monsters from spawning.
This is a pretty cool trip down memory lane: The evolution of Minecraft.

If the narrator didn’t make me instantly murderous, sure.
I didn’t realise until tonight that, similar to the 1.9 pre-releases, you can download minecraft development snapshots: http://mojang.com/2011/12/08/minecraft-development-snapshot-week-49/
It gives you an idea of what Jeb is working on:
[ul][li] Sheep eat grass and regain their wool
[/li][li] Farmland is no longer destroyed by items and particles (haha, lol…)
[/li][li] Added multiple languages
[/li][li] Added a “spawn mob” egg item to creative mode
[/li][li] Corrected a setTileEntity multiplayer bug
[/li][li] Corrected a powered rail bug
[/li][li] Corrected a redstone update bug[/ul]

Is anyone still running MC version 1.8.1 and uses the Milliarie village mod? I have been trying to locate a version of this mod still compatible with MC 1.8.1 but I can’t find it. If you have a copy of this version of Millianarie Id really like to get a copy.

Question - when in creative mode, is it possible to select other block types other then those available as default? I tried googling but all I got are references to the old classic creative mode.
Fugitive

Is there a block missing from the list? Also, just to make sure, have you opened your ‘inventory’ in creative mode to see the full block list?

No. I actually didn’t think to look in the inventory at all. All I saw was the 10 blocks on the bar :)
My only problems with Minecraft are two fold: a lack of in game documentation, I’d like to stumble upon books that give recipes (I’d also like to just flip to the recipe instead of placing each and every block) instead of having to look everything up online.
And I HATE that the Creepers can stop themselves from blowing up. You hit them, they freak out and start blinking white…but then stop and continue chasing you. Fuck that, they are suicide bombers with a “backsies” button and that makes them 10 times more annoying, especially now that regular blowing up leaves no gun powder.

Once you get an iron sword you can do a rhythmic 3-hit attack to kill them outright.
Been playing this on a friend’s server with a small group, 2-3 other people. We built a base, then did a bunch of exploring. Found a Nether Fortress, a Stronghold, a bunch of abandoned mines and things. Crazy stuff! I didn’t even realize they’d added alchemy. 1.8 was the last time I played much.
Are there any cheap hosting options out there? My friend has an old machine running the server and about a megabit or so of upload bandwidth, so it’s mostly fine for just 2-3 of us playing. It’d be nice to be able to rent a 3-5 person server for cheap though. The occasional hiccups get really annoying, especially when you almost fall into lava or have a creeper explode in your face because of it :(
If $40/mo is cheap, Linode is where I hosted the old ones.
RE: multiplayer server: I’ve been spending my Minecraft time playing Terraria so if someone else wants to take the lead go for it. Otherwise I realistically won’t really think about it til Post xmas
So, to anyone with hosting experience out there… I’ve found some packages that are like $5.95 a month, but you only get a server with 256 MB RAM. They give you the ability to have 6 people playing at a time on that. Can Minecraft actually run well with that little RAM with six players? They have other packages with more RAM, but why pay $10 or $15 a month if the $5.95 option is going to work just fine. Seems like the CPU / bandwidth is the same no matter which package you choose, only the amount of RAM changes.
You need a gig of ram. The CPU provided will almost certainly be more than enough, as will network capacity.
I think the dedicated Minecraft hosting systems can get away with less RAM by running a bunch of servers on a single machine, so there’s less OS overhead, pages get shared, and they probably use Bukkit which had much lower RAM usage than vanilla when I played around with it. But you also lose a lot of control over the environment, you probably won’t get shell access, modding will often be unavailable or restricted to presets, you won’t be able to run any other supporting services, etc.
I’m not sure how bad they are for lag and such, but you could probably find some public servers running on various hosting services and see for yourself.
