I have been using the John Smith texture pack and DokuCraft the Saga Continues alternately…not sure if they’ve been updated for 1.3 yet, I haven’t played with it yet.
Ah thanks a ton Isis, I’ve seen both of those I’ll check them out. Just hard to try and pick something out of the sea of available options :P
Sure. Really, you can download a bunch and it’s pretty easy to switch between them, so you can always see which fits your tastes the best. A lot of them have customizers that make it easy to pick a subtle variation too.

So has anyone here tried the nuclear reactor mod?

Actually there is a 1.3 specific video here:
The one I watched was one of the related videos from the same user.
So… tons of shit I haven’t seen yet.
Anyone got a new server going? I’ve always found it to be lots of fun when you get a group to start a new server where you’re struggling to build up the basics and survive for a while. Jumping into an already established server and just wandering around and seeing all the awesome stuff that’s way cooler than anything you’ll ever build isn’t nearly as much fun :(
I was thinking of jumping back in to Minecraft as well, and wanted to see if anyone here had a mostly “vanilla” server going I could get in on.
I’m not really looking to join a server that has been running the same world for a year, and requires a whole suite of mods. I’m willing to install one or two things I can do quickly and easily, sure. And as Eric said, joining a server where there’s just a whole bunch of long-term projects already completed isn’t really the kind of thing I’m looking for.

I think the mod I only really want is the one that lets you hack blocks into smaller pieces and columns.
That would be RedPowerhttp://www.eloraam.com/
It is an awesome mod

I… uh… have never played Minecraft but I just picked it up.
I was able to get a vanilla server up and running and should be able to configure it for some people to connect. I know zero about installing mods, configuring servers, etc… if somebody wants to give me some pointers, I can try to get it up and running tomorrow so that you all can connect.
Meanwhile, I’ll go back to dying at night.
Getting just a basic server up and running is pretty simple. Mods add a lot more complexity (which is why I am avoiding them for the moment). For the basics, you really only need to decide if you’re going to whitelist or blacklist people and what you want to set the difficulty of the world to be, and you’re generally golden.
If you don’t want to run a server yourself, you can always set something up on Minefold (http://www.minefold.com) which is a hosting service that charges per user, not per server. So you can create a server and anyone can play it for up to 10 hours a month free (plenty for some people I know) and if you want unlimited play on any or all of their servers, it’s just five bucks a month. It’s pretty simple to get going if you just want to try out Minecraft SMP.
As an aside, if anyone finds a good large biomes seed with a coastal village and no nearby desert, let me know…I’m looking for one for a project I want to do.

Cool, thanks for the info. I have a home server that I can use to run it and a speedy internet package that should make it pretty smooth (I think?). I’d prefer just to have a whitelist of people from Qt3 and/or friends who can join – not random internet people. I’ll look into server configs.

I am interested in your concept of a clean server. Please send me your newsletter when convenient for you.

Edit: There are a lot of websites and also a wiki that have seeds that have interesting original setups.
Clay, do you know how fast your upload is? That’s going to be the major limiting factor for hosting a server from home. Minecraft, at least when I hosted a server about six months ago, chews up a TON of upload bandwidth for each player. Lots of chunks being sent out.

I’ll test it today because I can’t remember offhand.
It’s been nearly a year since I’ve really played, and the updates are dandy. So far I’ve only seen a fraction of them but I’m having a blast.
Especially, cats!

Only, mine refuses to leave his spot by the window, which is unfortunately where most of my good stuff is stored. He’s been sitting there for five game days. I tried hiking miles away to get him to teleport, but that didn’t work. I’m afraid to try destroying the chest.
Have you tried destroying the cat?
Of course not! What an idea.
But I figured it out. Destroying the chest did the trick.
(The cat’s still fine.)
Hack at him with a sword, put him in your inventory and then place him somewhere else.
Oh man, I wish I hadn’t done that. You owe me a cat now, Destarius. I suppose that’s a Creative Mode thing or something?
