grin one less cat and closer to my plan for world domination!

It seems with this patch, getting enchanted weapons/tools becomes a priority early in survival as it is so much easier to get experience with general survival activities.

Not too impressed with villager trading, as most of the offers are jacked. Yeah, I want to pay 6 emeralds for 2 pieces of flint…

What’s the purpose of the experience system? As a noob, I don’t really see what it’s doing.

Unless it’s changed in 1.3, you “spend” experience points to enchant things with an enchanting table. Be advised that if you die, you lose all your experience points, though it’s not like it’s hard to build them up again.

Yeah, it’s just for enchanting at the moment. Not a huge deal, but getting a Fortune pick or something can be nice.

Screw the experience points. I lost a diamond pickaxe and a bunch of buckets today. Don’t fuck around near lava.

That has pretty much always been the case. :)

I have a huge open area where I’m actually mining up from bedrock. I’m making the area wider. I’m actually cutting up from the bottom. I place blocks with torches and glass around them as light. Leaving layers of original floor. I should have understood the hissing of the lava. I just thought it was further away. I had 6 buckets of lava already. And six more buckets for a water area I had found. I finally found three diamonds. I was out of iron by that time. I figured I’d use my diamond pick for a while.

All of a sudden I have lava in front of me. I freeze up. I should pop a block in the hole right? But too late. Now I know there is water behind me. I start running for it. But dead. In a small channel. And I still have to go back and figure out what to do with the new lava flow.

Always, ALWAYS carry two buckets of water with you. You can put yourself out, create an infinite water source, and climb the sides of cliffs with water.

Well, shoot. I think I’ve been marked as a Cat Murderer in the feline world. Days and days have passed and ocelots are no longer showing up in my jungle backyard.

I’m making strides on my farm, orchard and mining operations, have located a huge set of unexplored caverns and mines, and I’m still on the lookout for diamond, so I have those things to keep me busy at least, but man, I miss my poor cat.

Man, I’m sorry - I thought you’d have realised that I was joking.

So – let’s say you’re a minecraft noob like me. Besides basic tool crafting, what would you teach yourself to do?

Farming wheat properly is useful. At some point you’d probably want to figure out red stone and mechanisms. Enchanting is also something to think about once you have a couple of diamonds and obsidian.

Hmm. I haven’t looked into farming at all. I’ve just been making steak for food, since there seem to be a ton of cows nearby. I’ve found redstone, but not diamonds.

Exploring the depths of newly discovered giant cave structures is pretty scary!

That’s not a particularly effective way of mining…

Heh, no hard feelings, Destarius. I’ll find myself another cat. :)

Yeah, I’ve found wheat to be the most reliable food source so far, although I haven’t done any livestock farming yet.

My little farm:

The water speeds up growth a bit.

The problem with cows and pigs is that they aren’t reliable in the long term – their spawn rates are such that if you are constantly pillaging the land for their tasty meats you will eventually run out, unless you’re breeding them – which you can’t do without a wheat farm.

There are a couple ways to have an inexhaustible supply of food though. Wheat is one option, but you can also use fishing, since fish aren’t an actual animal but a food item created through the fishing mechanic. If you can find an abandoned mineshaft, village or a dungeon you should be able to find melon seeds eventually too (they are only found in chests in structures). They are used in a lot of potions too, so if you ever want to mess with that, having a melon farm is pretty useful as well.

Other than making tools and finding food, everything else is sort of optional depending on what you want to do. There’s a lot of tutorials on how to make the best branch mine, or you can try to build something crazy, or just explore a bunch, but that’s really up to you. If you have a question about something specific, feel free to ask and I’m pretty sure someone can point you in the right direction. :)

Water will spread from a channel for 3 spaces, so you actually have more water than you need there. :)

I only farm for the mats - my main source of food is bread. I usually like to deal with creepers from a distance so getting feathers from chickens is a huge source of pain. As I’m gearing up to enchantment, getting leather from cows is also a priority.

Actually the problem I have with that farm is in wheat collection. I imagine he is walking through that water to collect wheat when he could have half-block walkways right on top of the water that he could then walk on.

And yeah he can maximize water efficiency by having the wheat rows be 2- or 3-blocks wide.
