Big thanks to whoever mentioned the Feed the Beast mod. Simplest way yet to get a number of excellent mods with a mere mouse-click or two.

It seems there are still a lot of problems with mod incompatibility too. The ExtraBiognomesXL crashes whenever that mod is used. It has some block conflicts although I am not sure which mod it had issues with.
I can’t even use not enough items, that crashes whenever I open my inventory. Buildcraft has some item ID duplicates with Industrial craft even. Gah! I did resolve the last one because someone on the buildcraft forum posted an alternate set of item ids that worked.

Yup, the latest buildcraft build is causing lots of issues and the latest forge is incompatible with EBXL. Should be fixed on 3.6.0. But Thaumcraft 3 is out, goodness.

I’ll just be over here in the corner, silently crying while waiting for RedPower to be released.

Does the ExtraBiognomesXL mod include trees from other mods? For example, will rubber trees spawn in these new biognomes? I guess Ill check every few weeks for updates.
The last time I updated minecraft was to version 1.0. It kind of sucks that when it converts to the new format for saves, it destroys all blocks generated by mods.
I do have another question, one mod I am using is Optifine. I have noticed something which I think may be caused by the many settings it has. Many blocks or items, especially if the item or block is from a mod and not part of the base minecraft stuff is visual artifacts. For example looking at the farms created by the NPCs in Milliarie mod, the plants all have little lines shooting strait up. Each block in the rubber trees from IC has a very thin red outline. Anyone have an idea what setting is causing this or a workaround?

I have a configuration question about buildcraft if anyone knows. In the buildcraft config file I used use these two settings:
set to true for allowing machines to be driven by continuous current
B:current.continuous=true
S:power.framework=buildcraft.core.RedstonePowerFramework
The end result was, I could place a redstone torch next to a wooden extraction pipe and it would pull the items out of the device or box it was connected to. Now I do this and nothing happens. I am guessing this is either no longer supported (but this power.framework= is still in the config file it generates) OR the name buildcraft.core.RedstonePowerFramework is wrong.
I noticed the penumatic framework was buildcraft.energy. I tried changing core to energy but that didn’t happen.
Does anyone know the right name or if this is still supported?
ExtraBiomesXL only includes its own tree types; if you want rubber trees from IC2 or Redpower, then you have to install them as well.
The map conversion to Anvil doesn’t destroy mod blocks (I’ve taken a Tekkit server through it), but it is quite possible that with new versions of the mods, block IDs may get reorganized or there may be other incompatibilities that could cause trouble.
And it looks like the Buildcraft code currently forces it to use the pneumatic power framework, regardless of what you actually put in the config file, and this was a fairly recent change.

Grrr. I hope they fix that. I also do not have oil spawning in my worlds. I am trying to get filler to work but I can’t seem to power it with a redstone engine. I can put one one it, but the engine will not run. If I daisy chain them, all of them will run except the one attached to the filler.

Redstone engines now only power wooden pipes and pumps. To power machines use Stirling or Combustion engines. Or Forestry engines, which is a buildcraft addon that is pure joy.
Railcraft also have several BC engines that run on steam, and when Redpower2 releases, it will also have a BC engine powered by blutricity.
I have been running a small server with a few friends for quite a while now. Keeping mods updated has been a major hassle, and we’ve restarted from scratch multiple times due to one mod or the other not being updated.
But having once played with Industrial Craft 2, RailCraft and Buildcraft, it’s hard (if not impossible) to go back to vanilla. We have now begun using the automated configuration of Feed the Beast and I can not recommend it enough. It keeps both clients and server up to date and is practically maintenance free for the users.
Ugh, reading this thread just makes me sad that Mojang have done basically NOTHING with this game since release. All the interesting cool shit is in mods, mods, mods. They haven’t even bothered implementing a decent modding toolset/api/whatever for the community to make that easier for modders or users.
I got massssssive value in this game for my money, so I am not shitty about it, just mournful for where they could have taken it. Such a shame.

This is odd. When one of my worlds was upgraded, all IC and Buildcraft blocks were removed. Yet in my inventory and in chests still had mod specific items in them. IE: Pipes and I still had my batpack on with a mining drill.
I built my world without any oil. Now the redstone powerframework doesn’t work either because it is broken or they are removing it and now I can only use redstone engines for the most basic tasks. This is very frustrating.
This update has been nothing but an exercise of frustration for me. It has been one problem after another. I was reading a post on the buildcraft forums and they are saying sterling engines do not work on builders. They cause the builders to turn into blocks or something.

You could try Buildcraft 3.2.2 which was released a few days ago, maybe it was fixed. If only they had a changelog somewhere, the jenkins might be okay, if you can understand that mess.

Thanks for that link, Ill try it tonight when I get home. The official site still has the 3.2.1 on it.

I’ve never gotten into Minecraft. I’m thinking about buying it for my kid, but I have a preliminary question.
What is the point of the game? Are there goals/missions/things to accomplish beyond just building stuff that you want to build?
Kadath

It’s like Lego… With survival.
About the only real ‘goal’ the game itself has is to kill the ender dragon, though it doesn’t even really push you towards that (it’s extremely unlikely you’d ever discover strongholds and the end portal by yourself). Otherwise it’s pretty much set-your-own-goals.
There are a bunch of adventure maps that people have made that take you through a quest, though. You kind of have to play along, since there’s usually nothing stopping you from breaking down that iron door with a pick instead of finding the right ‘key’ to open it like it tells you to.
And there are challenge maps where you start out with limited resources and have to meet some goal, like collecting a bunch of pieces of wool scattered around the map, protected by hordes of monsters. Vechs’ Super Hostile maps are probably the best-known of these.
And in other Minecraft news, today’s snapshot adds support for animated texture packs.

Hmmm. Are there goals to set that don’t generally consist of “build cool thing?”
I understand it not pushing you to do X over Y. I’m just wondering if there is more to the goals you can set for yourself than build stuff/dig and discover stuff.
I’m not sure the building/digging will be enough for him. He likes Terraria, enjoying the fact that there are things to do besides mine stuff and build stuff (even if he can do those other things in his own time).
I’m thinking about getting him Minecraft as sort of a “cooler” Terraria, but if there are no dungeons to explore, boss monsters to gear up for, etc. (even if you can do them at your own pace or ignore them if you want), then I might need to go in a different direction.

While it sounds like having no goals and just building stuff wouldn’t be much of a game… Minecraft has become THE GAME for millions of kids. All other games are a break, they always come back to Minecraft. Kids play Minecraft on the playground. I never would have predicted it but I guess I underestimated just how many are willing to put in their own effort and creativity and make their own fun. Terraria is a game. Minecraft is an infinite playground.
