16 millions units sold.. Which now makes it the best selling PC game ever, apparently. 54 million across all platforms.
I’ve seen minecraft being played, and know it is a great thing for kids and gaming and a deserving dev. But now i find a mod that makes me want to play it also. It’s called ‘Life in the woods’ and RPS did an article on it with a video and everything. I want Minecraft for myself now.

RPS stuff here:
What’s the point of this modpack? Mostly the visuals? And a few other gameplay conveniences? If this is worth playing, Minecraft has always been worth playing.
Not conveniences, more of a play style I would say. It’s geared more for exploring (new biomes, new caves) and leading a minimalist, conservative, and pragmatic lifestyle…very low tech and focused on a “hands-on” approach to eking out an existence in harmony with the natural world.
I’ve never played Minecraft, so my understanding is not complete, but i think it basically bundles a bunch of mods (approx 40?) together with a specific ‘natural world’ theme and you can also add some shaders to make it look as lovely as it does in the video clip, and i think it does indeed look very nice. Maybe nice enough for me to finally get the game (cause i’m a graphics whore). And the link in the RPS article to a youtube vid about installing is not the better/complete version. The same guy helps you set it all up in this video, including those shaders:
That’s a gorgeous looking video, but my poor Mac Mini probably can’t handle all those fancy shaders.
Honestly, Minecraft has made me long for a gaming PC more than any other game in the past few years. There are console games I know would look better on a powerful PC, and still a handful of PC games that never show up on Mac or consoles at all, but mostly it’s the poor Minecraft performance on my Mac that tempts me to go back to the dark side.

Actually how do you use those shaders? The mod I use for the enhanced graphics is opti-fine. It seems to be the one everyone uses, but my water doesn’t look like that.

I’ve gotten burned a few times with mod compilations, but the family and I have really been continuing to enjoy Tekkit (industrial / tech / space modpack) and Hexxit (questing / adventuring / fantasy modpack). I wish a lot of this stuff would make it’s way into basic Minecraft – some of it would be 100x better with an eye towards balance, pacing, and UI design. But the modpacks are fun to spruce things up every now and then.
Okay, that actually sounds intriguing. Can you explain more about the survival aspects and what’s different?
The shader mod goes in your mods folder, and the shader pack goes in your shader packs folder. Then there is an in-game ‘shaders’ option to select which shader pack to use.

What shaders were they using? I guess I could just google “minecraft shaders” or something like that.
It’s all in the link to the mod post #4608
“Sildurs Vibrant shaders”
I’m pretty sure that’s a D&D spell.
What is this exactly:
‘Minecraft’s Bukkit Mod ‘Ended’ By Dev, Continued By Mojang’:
The shockwaves of Mojang’s decision to begin enforcing their Minecraft EULA are still being felt. In a forum message posted earlier today,
Because i don’t even have Mincraft yet, but if this is about blocking modding to the game that would be a real bummer! Life in the Woods!!!
It’s about blocking customer monetization of the game, specifically servers that provide ‘pay to win’ perks to players.

I disagree. This is an internal struggle between a former employee of Mojang and the company. The claims of EULA enforcement forcing him out are bogus. He evidently sold the rights and got a job with them a couple of years ago. It is more a claim of property ownership.
Mojang is about to release the ‘official’ Bukkit (probably rebranded). Evidently Loo quit his job - and now is out of the process. That seems to be the real story.
Sorry, I should have clarified - I was commenting specifically on “Mojang’s decision to begin enforcing their Minecraft EULA” and whether that was about blocking modding, not the Bukkit thing.
Ah ok, thanks. Internal politics and stopping blood-suckers (pay-to-win) in their tracks. I can still play Life in the Woods for years to come :)
Minecrafty Tolkien fans might want to check out The Lord of the Rings mod. It’s a WIP but already a load of content and quite playable. It sports: custom biomes, mobs, NPCs, buildings, items, questing system, faction alignment, 100’s of achievements, cooking, brewing, hiring, and … elves! In a nutshell, it’s fairly ambitious, works quite well, and the author knows his Tolkien.
I 've been wandering the Shire for a few days just doing quests to raise my faction with the hobbits. Finally got a Shirriff Chief to talk to me and allow me to hire personal (unmounted) shirriff guards. Soon I’ll be able to perform marriages and maybe I’ll build my own hobbit hole, though I really want to visit the dwarves in the Blue Mountains and take advantage of their unrivaled forges! I did happen to meet a travelling dwarf merchant in Hobbiton which was rather exciting…
Supports mutiplayer too!
Edit: you’ll want install Optifineto fix the horrible unloaded chunk lighting issues that 1.7 suffers from, otherwise it might be unplayable due to constant pauses
