Yeah I just followed the wiki. Just working on creating a portal platform now
Thanks for the server! Just spent about 20 minutes on there with Wolff and scharmers speaking through his mighty Valar voice (server console), guiding us to the Ring Portal to Middle-earth. I never made it… had to quit. :(
Definitely need to upgrade Forge to connect! Also, Optifine is a must. I’m also enjoying Dynamic Lighting mod (in my SP) which allows carried torches to shed light. And Bibliocraft. Not sure if Bibliocraft has a multiplayer component but it’s really quite excellent for decorating with the shelves and bookcases and furniture, etc.
Update from above: Look for Splatticvs Mine. The portal is there.
Alright, so stuff on the server front seeing how there is some interest here:
- Backups are being made.
- Server hardware is “Mighty” in the sense that it’s not that mighty at all. Four is the player limit now and you can tell when all four players are on :) Looking at this. I have… other boxes (balefully eyes the render box in the corner)
- Server is in development for Your Maximized Pleasure. This means server bounces; I’ll ping folks before I bounce it.
- Connection issues are being looked at.
- Have fun! Thanks to the early folks who pointed out that only one portal can be active at a time, and LuciferJones for the signage.
Server will be kept up for as long as there is interest barring any other factors.

The simple concept I am loving so far is that the Shire is safe, and as you explore farther, the danger will be greater. What a perfect compromise between creative mode and hardmode! I really like that feature so far. Now to find that pear tree, and help out the hobbits with their nutritional needs.
Server moved to render box, which has a lot more single-CPU power (important for Minecraft). Based on ticks, I think we’re much better off.
IP is the same.

Groovy I’ll hop on in a bit
Agreed. It’s nice to have some time to get settled and learn the basics of the mod without monsters getting all up your grill. Working through the nights (and even underground!) is so peaceful.
As for pears (and fruit in general), I won’t spoil it, but trees aren’t the only place to find em.
Nice, thanks for setting this up. I’m already knee deep in my single-player “silly role-play” LotR series for Youtube, otherwise I’d probably spend a bunch more time on it. I think it’s got a lot of potential for some fun multiplayer interaction, especially if you can get someone to be eeeevil
FastCraft has been enabled on the server, and I’d recommend you put it in your mods folder to see if it helps with chunk generation, pauses, and FPS.
(MC 1.7.10 has some nasty lighting issues this mod fixes).

Would it be possible to change the fast travel timer from 60 minutes to say 30? Would make for easier exploring on limited time budgets =)
I looked around for that setting yesterday (I hate the pause as well). For some reason, it looks hard-coded in :\
Apparently, there is a (op) command to change the delay. From the Wiki:
This mod looks really awesome. Unfortunately I have only had time to scratch the surface of it.
I’ll give it a try once the server is back up (I’m doing a scandisk after hearing some worrying noises from the HD).
edit: Server is back up, fast travel timeouts reduced to 15 min.
Just read this reasonable article on the mod situation for Minecraft, it might be interesting for some ideas etc (it’s an rps article):

My kids spend lots of time with MC lately. It was all good and well until they started asking that I install mods.
Damn, installing MC mods require some sort of IT qualification it seems. To begin with, it seems you need to get the MC client, the forge mod and whatever mod you want to play to have the same. Then you need to create profiles for mods and run them and edit them, and point the used version to the forge version and so on and so forth and the end result is I get crashes or the damn things just don’t work.
It doesn’t help that the help articles I found were very poorly written :(
So if someone can give me a short run down on what’s what and what’s the easiest way to get mods working and maintained I’ll be very grateful.
The easiest way to get mods working is to get one of the mod pack launchers (the main ones are Technic, FTB, and ATLauncher) and load a pre-assembled mod pack. Many of these packs are assembled around various themes and are now fairly well-tested to ensure the mods work together well, but they can also be fairly overwhelming and not necessarily exactly what you’re looking for.
If you want to assemble your own, you can do it in the vanilla launcher, but it’s easier to use something like MultiMC, which will make it easier to manage separate installs and download and install Forge. Here are some basic instructions on how to use it.

Thanks. I’ll give MMC a go.

The way I did it with was to pick a base mod pack from technic that had a lot of stuff I wanted, then just modded the mod pack. Took out what I didn’t like and added in some new stuff I did want. Just be sure to turn off updating after you do that.
