Ah, so rule number one is really more like “see rule number 2”.

How to get your copy of Minecraft for Windows 10 if you already own Minecraft for PC.

Snagged. Had to migrate my username-only MC account to a Mojang account first, but otherwise pretty painless.

Edit: I’m glad I had an ancient Xbox Live account, since you need one. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Would be great if it worked on Xbox one as well, since they seem to try to connect the two in every way.

Why do i want this beta version when I can just use the versions I am already using?

  1. It’s free.
  2. Eventually, it’s going to be the preferred (exclusively supported) version.

Its only free if you already paid for a MC account. Is the older version going away? How is modding support for the new version? Thats what is important to me. I have no interest in vanilla minecraft.

  1. Right. It’s free is you have already purchased Minecraft on PC. I’m assuming it’s free for you since you claim to be using a version of that now.

  2. Mojang says they are supporting and updating all current versions of Minecraft for the foreseeable future. The intent is to eventually pare it down so all versions are based on the Win 10 version. The “One Windows, One Vision” thing.

  3. Modding for the new version? No one knows. Obviously, they intend to sell the DLC packs they’ve been selling on consoles to Win 10 users.

Isn’t this Win 10 version a port of the mobile version? Can’t hurt to claim my copy I guess.

Yes, because the mobile version is already native code instead of requiring java.

Just a little pre-heads up. Life in the Woods:

The creator Phedrun has been working on a new version for a later version (1.7 something iirc) of Minecraft which will include lots of improvements and bug fixes and a much easier way to install it. You can bet your bottoms dollar (is that an expression in the usa?) that i will post links and everything when they happen! This mod was the reason i got Minecraft in the first place and it has been a joy to play (with a couple of other mods i added). I only play this version of Minecraft and it is teh awesome, so am very stoked about news of a new better version coming :)

Fingers crossed. The first time I read about this mod, I was unable to get most of what it was made of to actually work. Looking forward to trying it out again.

Yeah it was a little tricky if you wanted the amazing (for minecraft) shaders to work. The base game was fine on the 1.6.4 version it needed, but normal minecraft looks so fuggly really, colours and effects etc. Yeah i know, i’m such a graphics whore! Phedrun was aware of the issues for some people, so that is why she is keen to make it all in a single installer this time, so hopefully more folk can get to experience it.

Can you recommend a texture pack for Life in the Woods? I am a big fan of the BDCraft look, and there is a pack for Life in the Woods, but it has some missing textures and some glitches (the falling leaves are giant for some reason).

I’d like to find something, because the vanilla textures are a dealbreaker for me – especially now that I have a new PC that can jam on those awesome shaders. (I am using Sildur’s vibrant shaders (v.1.08 high) on top of Karyonix’s GLSL (v. 2.2.2), but am happy to try others if anyone has any suggestions.)

Also, obligatory recommendation for MultiMC, which makes messing around with mods super-duper easy.

Well i just used the install instructions from the Life in the Woods site:

http://www.lifeinthewoods.ca/life.html

As that certainly looks good enough for my enjoyment of the game. I’m not sure what texture packs work best with that?

Bored? Nothing to do? I’ve set up a small Vanilla MC server at 73.225.226.104. If you or your kids want to just mess around on a unmodded server, feel free.

It’s running on a box with plenty of RAM and an SSD, and is limited to 4 players. Bounce in if you’re not doing anything else.

Some sneak preview footage of the new Life in the Woods coming soon :)

And here is the website i guess it will be available from when ready :)

9/10 awesome (would have been 10/10 because i will need to add a few mods myself probably, like a ‘slow down minecraft day/night cycles’ etc)

Flying cape officially coming to Minecraft PC version.

Minecraft 1.9 Combat Update is out.

Shields, dual-wielding, attack cool-downs, etc.

Any thoughts?

Here’s a fairly comprehensive look at what’s new as far as game-play changes go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xV--fTvRLqs

Pets on boats is pretty darn awesome and while I like the idea of all tools now being effective weapons I’m not too keen that the axe special attack (break shield) is really only useful in PvP tho one of the devs mentioned he’s going to see about having some mobs spawn with shields.

The positive arrow effects (gained by dipping them in potions) don’t have much use in PvE either. Feels like this should just be a PvP mod. I’d rather just have crafted arrows of better quality (iron, diamond, emerald).

Also wish they’d spent more time on new generated structures and biomes though I do like the changes to The End end-game.

I guess it’s hard to get too excited over new “vanilla” features since mods already do these things and more.
