Oh wow, I was beginning to suspect this about the iron, but this certainly cements it. Thanks!
You mean there are people whose towers aren’t above the cloud layer? :)

Why does my game suddenly have no sound? Is this because minecraft.net is down and I’m playing offline?

My entire skyway is above the cloud layer.
This game is like DF in reverse. The higher up you go, the safer you are!

In survival mode? It seems most people that go crazy building do so in the other modes, or with peaceful turned on. I don’t spawn anything.

Hell yeah. All that cobblestone you pick up from spelunking has to go somewhere!

Bah, that’s no fun.
I go crazy building stuff, during the day when it’s safe. At night I cower in my fortress. Either that or I go caving.
I actually really like how inconsistent the monster spawning is. Sometimes I’ll enter a cave and it’s virtually empty. Then I stumble upon a pssage and it’s wtf like 4 zombies, 5 skeletons, and a few creepers just for kicks. I actually like those, the skeletons shoot the zombies and then it’s like old school Doom!

I’m not going to go back and see if this has already been posted, but this tutorial on how to create a fireplace had me in absolute stitches:

Yes, that sound likely to me.

This is kind of how I feel. Making some kind of structure from scratch feels boring. Adapting the contours of the natural landscape into something inspired by it feels much more rewarding.

I’ve been lighting trees on fire to get them out of my way.

Same here, after the update no sound.
A fair point. In fact, my tower starts above the cloud layer.
I was looking for a high place to build it at.

With a decent view…

Unfortunately, it seems I have reached the top of the world. No stone can be placed above the parapet.
So this is my tower above the clouds, limited to 3 floors:

And even all the way up in the mountain, I find skeletons and, worse, creepers, at my door every day. So the rising sun invariably unveils either a few new arrows or the damage caused by explosions around my tower.

Absolutely in survival mode. Summoning is … a different sort of game that I don’t enjoy as much.
Height is the beginning of many gravity powered shenanigans. It’s virtually a must.
Edit: yeah, I thought my skyway is above the cloud layer, too, but it’s ~4 or so (descending to ~15 or so on the other side) below, looks like.

That tower, sir, looks like it took no more than a half hour to build.
Hehe. It looks nicer on the inside than out, with carved stairs and wooden floors. But, alas, you are nearly right. Apart from a long trip down the mountain to get more stone, hitting the ceiling prematurely cut short my endeavours. I was planning another 3 or 4 levels.
And as it occupies pretty much the whole vertiginous plateau, I can’t really extending it into a fort without spoiling the look of the summit…
You do get a beatiful view of sunrise and the zombies bursting into flames though.
Also, big mountain = lots of big caverns to explore. I’ve got my playgrounds at my doorstep.

This appears to be a new no-sound issue with today’s update. From what I understand, it has to do with the client trying to reach www(dot)minecraft(dot)net/resources, which no longer exists, and so, not being able to find it, disables sound. Even if you have the resources installed on your computer.

Quickest way to Delve Deep™ is to build yourself a ton of ladders, a ton of torches, then just dig the stone out from under your feet and keep going. You’ll only need one ladder every other space thanks to how the physics work. If you hear anything, stop. Hell, go 40 down and make a little space, maybe build a little room just for storage, then go down further.
There’s just something absolutely awesome about a mineshaft that descends 60 blocks into the bowels of the earth. It’s even more awesome when you break through into a natural one!
It’s worth noting that not having monsters makes this harder. So often the cue for digging is the sound of zombie, skeleton, or slime. And the slimes sound absolutely bloody evil when you’re that deep.

Ah, that sounds a lot worse. Guess playing offline is the only option for those who haven’t updated yet. Wonder if he’ll offer another free weekend.
