I’ve gotten lucky with a pig dropping off the cliff, but only once.

It’s Day 4 and I got some diamond and more iron. Tomorrow I plan to go all the way up to the surface to get some seeds (I destroyed my grass block). I’m sorry Doc but I can’t do this without crops.

I’m finding it much more challenging getting back in time for nighttime. I realize it’s my self imposed objective, but treating this as “home” is great.

I’m having ideas of getting some buckets of lava :)

And also using the water from the “ocean” way above as an “elevator” to get back down before sunset.

Time to go find some sand for glass as well.

I’m also making the walls of this fort double-thick. The threat from creepers is too great.

And yeah, the early availability of diamond isn’t exactly making this easier.

Yeah that’s a pain, for some reason I couldn’t set the spawn point in the garden. Every time I tried, I’d spawn somewhere else. If anyone knows how to fix this let me know. If I can’t fix this I might try making a tunnel system from the spawn to the garden, or I could leave as is, a few strategically placed torches should make the run easier.

yes and yes. Anything you find underground you can use. How and what you build is entirely up to you, as long as it’s interesting and tall.

The garden is there as a kind of safe place for the night when you first start out and a place to provide resources that are impossible to get underground.

You may want to hack in some grass blocks if you want any animals to spawn.

I’ve also had problems with skeletons and creepers fighting, blowing up parts of my wall. I’ve also be killed twice while in my base by spiders somehow getting over the wall. Including a skeleton riding a spider. The came out of no where scaring the hell out of me.

It’s a survival challenge. That is you have limited resources and you need to work to survive. This is still a sandbox game so if someone wanted to hide in a cave they could, I like to challenge myself so I try to spend every night in my base if I can.

Trust me, a diamond suit of armour won’t help you for long.

Hacking? I’m insulted. I’m currently building a stepcase down the side of the mountain and getting the grass to grow all the way down, and then across to my lawn.

I made some changes to the survival challenge map:

-Replaced dirt and gravel in western wall with sand and clay, so we no longer need to go to the surface.

-Added the walk of shame from spawn to the garden, to make it a little bit easier when you die.

I still can’t get the damn spawn to work properly, so the walk of shame will have to do for now.

caesarbear, it seems the diamond spawns are about the same distribution each level, however it does seem that the clusters tend to be bigger in the upper levels of the diamond spawns.

I’m on about Day 14 or so of Doc’s Xtreme Survival Challenge. Finally got enough stone to build a 3 block high wall up delineating my property with torches everywhere. This at least lets me work on the tower at night. I expanded the main fort, using the mossy cobblestone as a souvenir of sorts to build the base of the tower. Right now the problem is dirt. There’s a lot of it to be seen, but it’s all clumps and has to be dug out. The grass has only gotten maybe 10 blocks down from sea level so far, but I’m not too pressed for time on that. With fortifications built up, monsters are no longer a real threat, although there’s still a ton of them out there and the odd skeleton does jump up and get a shot off. Of course, creepers/spiders still make it dangerous on the initial journey out to the cliffsides.

I wish I could post pics.

And seriously considering hacking that grass back in.

Is interesting how Minecraft compare with boulder dash.

Theres not copying at all, but some ideas are soo powerfull that are reinvented.

It does? I played a lot of Boulder Dash on my C64 back in the 80ies. I don’t quite see what they have in common apart from the digging…

Well… there are blocks that fall, there are diamonds, monsters that mele attack is exploding and others, mostly superficial. Also there are some details that make boulder dash nothing like minecraft.

The interesting thing is that boulder dash is puzzle ish, Minecraft can also be made puzzle ish. Digging puzzles!

hmm, that’s an interesting hypothesis. Let’s take a closer look at diamond patterns.

When considered horizontally there’s certainly some clustering. I can’t quite see a difference in clustering at the upper levels vs lower levels though. For some reason level 15 is notably sparser than the others at that range. This is probably a quirk of this world.
3-18 Individually
Diamond likes to keep it’s distance but it doesn’t exist in isolation. If you hit diamond it’s almost a guarantee that another diamond is 15-30 blocks away on that same level. While there are many large horizontal pockets without diamond, it’s extremely rare for any diamond to go neighborless.

If anyone wants to repost this. My progress on DocLazy’s challenge:

Lots o’ fun.

Damn, nice work Charles. How long did that take you?

Ok, now I’m impressed.

Given the time playing the game to get it done… probably about 10 hours?

OK. Now that is a tower that didn’t take half an hour to build. Very nice work.

I just bought this game without having tried it due to the amazing youtube vids and the praise here. :) Whee!

I wish there were sheep in multiplayer, I need cloth , as I want to make a ship in a bottle. :(
