EVERY official forum is filled with children.

Looking at a self selecting poll on that forum and drawing a conclusion from it is dingleberryish.

[EDIT]

I apologize for calling you a troll…you seem to be sincere. I just think you’re wrong about this.

Hey Tei, 12-17 is a lot different to 12-13.

Tei is not a troll and frankly I think he’s right. Look at how many people in this thread have mentioned that their kids play. You won’t read that in the Civ V thread. Hundreds of thousands play Minecraft so of course you’ll find all ages, but the subject matter, the easy of use, etc, seems tailored for the lower end of the 12-17 scale. Plus not many 10 year olds would answer an internet poll.

Whaa? You’re forgetting what it was like to be a kid.

This game is computer lego.

Facepunch(the boards for Gmod) posters are almost entirely juvenile, as is the player base. These sandbox, creative games are immensely popular with 12-18 year olds. It’s just self serving for an adult playing Gmod or Minecraft to think “this is a game only adults can really appreciate”.

So I don’t find it hard to believe a flamewar would erupt over fighting about who originally made the video, instead of just enjoying the fact that it was posted for everyone to see, because the people posting are so young.

I find it harder to believe that the age of Minecraft fans on some non-Minecraft forum is a better representation of the general age of Minecraft fans than the age range represented on the official Minecraft forum.

Well there is no reliable evidence to back either opinion. A poll isn’t reliable and neither is a hunch.

We just won’t know until somebody does a scientific study of the player base. Given the popularity I’m pretty sure this will happen eventually :)

Well, the official forums are dwarfed by the number of people who play it on SA, Penny Arcade, and 4chan (heh), so whatever.

Lego didn’t force you to work for your fun. It’s instant. You put blocks together, hey presto! No digging and smelting required.

I also think it’d doubtful you’d get such a high percentage of people purchasing it if so many of them are 12 or 13 years old.

That’s what the parent’s credit card is for. This one they could probably even buy with permission.

Not at all. Though the SA thread is 600^H^H^H700 or so pages and counting, it gets a lot of repeat business.

Oh come on. Those flat 1x3s didn’t fish themselves out the pile.

Yeah, I gotta say, 12-14 was probably my high-water mark in terms of creative output, at least quantity-wise. Comic books, stories, maps of nonexistent continents, etc.

but on to better things…

If you don’t know the Quandary terrain set, check it out. I use a custom mix of terrain that borrows liberally from Quandary as it doesn’t introduce drastic changes and keeps your world view close to everyone else’s but makes the visuals more pleasant. But what’s new is this Quandary Rotator which will automatically rotate your terrain textures through the seasons. How cool is that!?

I don’t mind acknowledging that the game has broad appeal. I do think it’s bullshit to suggest that it’s mostly for 12-13 year olds.

How many 12-13 year olds even play PC games these days? It’s all consoles and handhelds.

Because the official forums are full of unique snowflakes and there isn’t a community built up of people who post a hell of a lot? Hmm. I’m not sure on that one I’m afraid.

I’ve been remembering some of the stuff I made when I was 6-7 from Lego and Meccano. I swear they were the best goddamn trucks ever. Bet they were terrible though :(

Well… another feature that Notch can implement, and that can be amazing, is autodownload terrain sets, so different servers can have different textures, with a option for the user to override then.
And with that, customized sounds.
But thats is modding stuff, so probably has to end for wen modding is implemented.

No one said that, just that it attracts 12 year olds.

I was a pretty hardcore PC gamer at 12 in 1986 when the NES was the big thing in the US. Plus it’s not like Minecraft requires a gaming rig.

Alright then just look at raw numbers. 30,000 posts in the main Minecraft SA thread compared to 30,000 posts in the official forum for multiplayer. Oh and those 200,000 posts for singleplayer.

He mentioned something along these lines I think.

“x attracts a very juvenile public - 12 to 13 year olds” when making a statement about a game is NOT the same thing as saying it appeals to everyone.

Cool story! However, not even remotely relevant to today. Today we have the NDS, the PSP, the Wii, the 360, the PS3, and the older consoles. And the console market has reached incredible proportions. We’re niche, man.

You have people on the Minecraft forums with hundreds or thousands of posts purely about Minecraft. The same isn’t true on places like SA, PA, 4Chan, and the rest of the internet communities that have gotten into the game. It’s not an easy comparison.

Beyond that stupid poll - which, incidentally, doesn’t prove the point given how broad the range is - there is simply no evidence to suggest that there’s hordes of 12-13 year olds playing Minecraft. But there IS an awful amount of evidence to suggest that the game attracts all sorts, especially older gamers who are capable of coming up with some amazing ingame productions.

Come on man, doesn’t that fact that it’s popular with 4Chan tell you anything? I think you’re really arguing over nothing as Teiman didn’t, nor anyone else, said it was made for 12 year olds. Don’t slam the guy for making a guess (which some of us think is reasonable) and not provide any evidence beyond you not knowing any 12 year olds.

Why yes, the vast number of people playing it on various forums or posting videos about or people I know personally who aren’t 12 to 13 year olds is no evidence at all! Come on, yourself.

4Chan is also not exactly where 12 year olds hang out.

I don’t get it. Are you really saying that you think Minecraft doesn’t trend more juvenile then something like Mass Effect 2 or whatever?

I’m disagreeing with the idea that it appeals mostly to 12/13 year olds. Whether it ‘trends more juvenile’ than ME2 is irrelevant - I suspect it appeals to a broader section of the gaming community full stop.

And now I’ve lost a goddamn cable that I had in my hand literally 5 minutes ago so I’m getting annoyed and will stop this line of argument, as we’re never going to convince each other.

Again, you misread the argument. It’s completely relevant whether it trends juvenile because that was the entire argument: That Minecraft is like Gary’s Mod in that the community, although broad, has a disproportionate amount of 12 year olds.
