And how is that different from a giant upwards or sideways sliding door? Or even a drawbridge? All really have two states, open (walk-through) or closed; a drawbridge would have two states down and up.

Er, what? How is it “basically” a cellular automata?

Well… “basically” because is not completelly a cellular automata. The players and these stuff is not usual in a cellular automata. How fire and water spread totally fit on how a celular automata work. Water spread “reproducing” generating new celules that transfer the “age” to his childrens, the cell that is generation 6 cant give birth to new cells. If theres a fall, age is reseted to zero again.

We need more pictures of worlds and construction projects. Bring it on, people.
Someone needs to make the anvil fortress from Loom.
Here’s the view from the top of my new vaulted bridge:

And this is where my fortress/village will be:
I want to have stone castle towers and balconies jutting out from the cliff walls, with a tree farm, wheat farm, pool, and fenced yard down in the central area. It’s gonna be sweet.

Well, the way I imagined those things to be built (particularly a portcullis or a drawbridge) would be through mechanical means coded into the game. I suppose you could have a 5x3 “door,” but without proper animation it would look silly. Same with a drawbridge.
So, I thought you were implying that the doors would be actual blocks that you built and could then manipulate through the world, and not the on/off state that you describe (and how it’s implemented right now).
My mistake for misinterpreting what you meant.

OooooOOOOooo.
Nah, just visual flair to go with larger toggleable on/off surfaces would do it for me :)

It is not looking very good for an update this week.
@notch i’m going to ask a question i’m sure you get all the time, What’s the chance your going to have a secret Friday update?
@Connormast12 i honestly don’t know. I wouldn’t count on it this week.

Notch has mentioned adding moving blocks to the game, for elevators etc.
For anyone wanting to make a castle, there are plenty of castle floor plans floating around the internet that could be used. I’ve been wanting to build an epic fortress for a long time, I’m just not sure what to put in it and since I usually design my buildings from a practical perspective(everything needs a purpose) I haven’t managed to finish one yet.
This is my latest project:

I’m not sure what it is. It was going to be a tower with a cone like roof covered in dirt. The rails lead to an ore mine. This is an older world made before caves were added and the mineral deposits were made smaller.
It’s going to take a few months to get things sorted enough to the point where he can start adding things in again. If he adds a new trick and it turns out to break a lot of things, he won’t have the time to fix it.

so just keeping track of my time, I’ve clocked close to 60 hours since I got this game 2 weeks ago, I think this is my game of the year :o

I can’t even sign in. Just downloaded the game for the first time – checker’s Google Maps Minecraft view tipped me over the edge – and, while I was able to create an account on the website, I get “Can’t connect to minecraft.net” error in game. And you can’t play offline unless you’ve played once online. Sigh. Back to Defense Grid for tonight :-)
Weird. Mine works fine. Sorry man!
What’s the one thing you shouldn’t have on your hotbar right next to the wooden planks when you are building a wooden bridge?
That’s right. Flint!

I couldn’t put it out fast enough. So I had to run back and sacrifice about 10 blocks of length of my brand new bridge to buy myself enough time to hack a 3 block gap.
All the while, I had visions of the guy burning down the Minecraft house. There were about a thousand planks in my bridge. Be still my beating heart.

ha-ha, dramatic at night!
You should try glass bridges. They let you see what is below them ;-)
You evil bastard… I’m now seriously thinking about redoing my sky bridge and fortress in glass.
Sigh.

Note that you can’t put stuff on glass. Including train tracks. :/
How about regular stuff like torches, other blocks (like dirt for trees), and so on?
I haven’t had time to test any of that yet, so I’m definitely curious.
