Torches that go out? Yikes, talk about a New Coke-grade design decision.

Releasing it on Halloween? A Sunday? Friday would be better… ruin my weekend instead of my work week. :)

The torches-that-go-out-and-permanent-lanterns thing was announced ages ago, and is apparently the way it was always supposed to work.

I assume someone will make a script that automatically replaces previously placed torches in a world with lanterns.

It all sounds good to me (biomes, yay!) except maybe the has-to-brighter-the-deeper-you-go part.

Heh, it’s funny how some people forget the meaning of that little label on the corner that says “Alpha” ;).

Being honest, we don’t know how finished is the game. Perhaps the finished version, design wise, will differ substancially from the actual game. Perhaps even more that Notch can suppose right now, projects evolve a lot sometimes.

I suppose most people will just use a mod that set torches to live forever.

Why will you play this game in a different way?, the game is nicelly balanced grind/fun, making you forced to reignite torches will move the balance towards grind.

Anyway may be fun in SP…

You don’t have to grind torches… you have a choice, torches that burn out or lanterns that burn forever.

I want old torches grandfathered in. Any new torches you make, those can die, but the old ones should stay or be converted to lanterns.

Thats how it will work*. But you will need to make lanterns from now on, and I don’t know the recipe, but you can bet is way more expensive than torchs.

*old torches in savegames will turn into lanterns.

They shouldn’t grow back, no. Though torches are still good to use to make it very easy to return at nighttime.

I use Doku, non-flower version, which I modified to get rid of the glass texture (just a border).

I know I’m being overly skeptical, and it’s only because it all sounds so cool… but I’m not yet going to get my hopes up over that announcement. If Notch manages to get all of that stuff implemented in less than a month, all while trying to set up his new company with new employees and a new office and all the paperwork, as well as planning his wedding, then… I’ll be very impressed (and also very excited). Until then, I’ll just try to stay calm and enjoy the game as it is, heh.

Supposedly biomes are already implemented, is only that theres not decent way to make the transition from biomes looks decent. He either have found how to do that, or is making concesions, like puting some weird biomes in isles.

So is not 30 days to write all that from scratch, but move from prototype to functional and debugged code.

He’s also hired two people. I don’t remember what the one guy does, but the other is handling the money flow and server, so maybe he picked up what he was working on before the money hit the fan.

Yeah, it’s something I’m really not looking forward to. Hopefully lanterns don’t use iron.

Unless it is balanced by making iron easier to find in larger quantities. Perhaps he will also introduce a lesser metal, such as copper or brass that would be used for things like lanterns.

Or make the recipe produce 10 lanterns.

Wonder what the lanterns will use for fuel… discuss!
