Oh absolutely, I look up crap like the wonktacular water behavior.

I did spot my first above-ground waterfall last night.

Water mostly go down (waterfalls), but not horizontal (rivers)… well… can move 6 blocks, but 6 blocks hardly make a river. I can imagine some weird terrain where go both down and horizontal, with some minicascades every N blocks, so rivers are possible. I have never seen one, don’t seems like something this mapgen is happy to generate, but probably is possible.

There’s apparently a random chance of some sort that there will be a water or lava spring that exists one block deep into a stone wall, either above or below ground. Since they’re so common below ground, I’m almost thinking it’s nearly impossible for their not to be a underwater lava/water flow within a certain amount of area.
Phantom page 64, I smite thee!
EDIT: Man, this is going to become annoying quickly. I apologize. Here is a picture of a stairway I am building in my underground dwarven kingdom.

Due to the way water is populated above ground, rivers will probably occur naturally if Notch ever adds ravines to the terrain generator.
But what I’d really like is a greatly expanded Z-axis. Reaching the clouds in a world should be an ordeal, not 30 seconds of hopping.
We could build beanstalks and spawn giants up there.
That’s not a mine. It’s a tomb!!
(very nice, actually. I want to see the insides)
Notch has confirmed on his Twitter feed that all torches will automatically be replaced by lanterns when the update goes live. I still wonder if that goes for inventory items as well, if you want to be prepared, or if it’ll only be placed ones…
And speaking of light sources, I made a lighthouse last night, but torches are pretty weak as a long-distance light source. I think I’ll revamp it with a column of lava, once I get more comfortable with the fluid mechanics and confident that I’m not going to destroy my own structures with it. I’ll probably need a catch basin to prevent overflow, and more distance on the internal stairwell (“Please hold on to the railings and try not to touch the lava 5cm to your left…”).

I’m gonna miss my fantabulous glass torch beacon tower. Lanterns just won’t be the same.

Wow, you guys are making some amazing stuff. I wish I had more time to devote to this game to make something like y’all did.

Eh, I understand you might like current torches, but I actually think the torches make your tower look way worse off than otherwise.
I’m hoping that lanterns are brighter than torches. I think right now, with the game’s graphics as they currently are, that there’s just too many damn torches to place in order to make yourself “safe” at night.

Yeah, that was my first thought too. Lanterns should have a higher light radius, making them truly worth the effort.

Torches are rated 14, Lava/fire is rated 15. Not much of an improvement.
What is the rating for a fiery tree trunk? That seems to give off a lot of light.

The tree trunk makes no difference, it’s the fire that gives off light… 15.
Fire is 15 and lava is 16, according to Minepedia. I might actually have to try one of those infinite fire blocks first; it would be a lot less effort required to rework the existing structure.

Hrm… the “Lights” article on Minepedia still has 15 for lava. I’m not sure which is correct. Would be easy to test though.
Would make sense since lava does such a good job illuminating underground caverns to a brightness that you just can’t get with torches.

With lava, every single block of it gives off light. Of course it lights up caves like crazy… it’s like placing a few dozen torches in a room.
As for burning logs, I’ll be surprised if those don’t get nerfed along with the torches.
