I’ve already found a sweet marble cave of wonders!!! Not a bad start Fugitive. No crazy flying islands or giant mountains yet, though.

Name is mcknight27, would love to get whitelisted.

It’s my GFWL nick

Added both of you!

I don’t think I got Tekkit properly installed. I had to do it manually since it wouldn’t even get past the first step of the Nerd Farm installer, and then I edited the .bat to just do what it’s supposed to do without checking for stuff, after I installed Tekkit… and yeah none of the mods seem to be doing anything.

Hmm, do you get any specific error messages at any point along the install? The batch files don’t really do anything special, just adjust the APPDATA environment variable so that it runs from the local directory instead of the default one. It needs a completely clean, unmodded 1.0.0 client to start with though, which is tougher now that 1.1 was released today.

Yeah I backed up my 1.0.0 Minecraft, so I have a fresh copy working, but the nf_install.bat file did not recognize that I had a “Minecraft installation” in that directory, even though I copied my clean 1.0.0 /.minecraft folder into the Tekkit install directory.

Wow, cool thread. I’ve only read a page or two, but already I feel enlightened. My daughter built me a minecraft world for Christmas this year. :)

We’ve been having problems with it crashing, and I notice people are recommending installing the 64bit Java runtime. I hope that helps us. I can’t be sure what version of Java I had on this PC previously, but I know the computer itself is 64 bit hardware.

What does the Tekkit Mod add, exactly? I looked and saw some new art packs and some stuff I didn’t really understand. Actually, forget I asked that question just now, and pretend I asked this question, which is clearly the deal breaker for Tekkit adoption in the Elhajj household: Does Tekkit contain the “Mine Little Pony” mod?

If it doesn’t, I don’t see how I could convince my daughter that we should upgrade. We are going through a Little Pony period here and it’s totally a blast.

Tekkit (and the Technic Pack it’s based on) mainly adds machinery-based features, like new ores, new machines to process them in, new ways to transport items, better ways of doing logic circuits, etc. Probably of very-little interest to the pony-minded, and no, it doesn’t contain ponies. I don’t know offhand of any packs that do include the MLP mod, so you might have to install it by yourself.

If you want to stick to easy-to-install packs, the Yogbox contains mods that mainly enhance the world’s environment, like adding more creatures like horses and bears and tigers and such, different trees, actually useful NPC villages, and some new enemies. Single-player only though, if you’re wanting to play with her on a server.

Thanks Fugitive! I appreciate the head’s up. If I know her, she’ll love Yogbox for her own single player stuff.

Too bad it’s not a multiplayer mod. We have been enjoying the multiplayer with MLP and it’s been a lot of fun. I’m going to lurk in this thread and see what other useful information I may be able to bring back to her.

Hmmm… I’ve just realized I have 750~ms ping to your server Fugitive. How is that even possible?

It’s a Linode node in California, so there’s the cross-ocean factor, but I’m not sure if that alone would make it that bad. It’s around 50ms for me, not sure what else I can do unfortunately.

I’d like to join the server. My username is marjamaa.

Ah yes, West Coast that might explain it. Still I’d normally be expecting somewhere between 230-350ms and 750 seemed extremely high. Nothing you can do of course, I was just exclaiming my surprise more then anything else :)

I’ve been sort of getting back into Minecraft again lately, and have been wanting to re-visit Technic again, so I’d love to check out your server, Fugitive. I’ll try and get everything installed and working this weekend, if you wouldn’t mind whitelisting me (benloran).

I still can’t get this shit to work. Server gives me a bad packet exception and there’s no evidence that Tekkit is actually installed. I don’t think these guys know that their installation is fucked up for 32-bit users and they don’t have any forums/faqs to cover it.

Tekkit.bat works in loading Minecraft but I don’t see how I’m supposed to know it’s actually installed. There’s supposed to be an “inventory mod” and some sound mod but I don’t see either making a difference. THough Minecraft is doing a good job of stuttering and locking up after about 10 minutes of play.

I see the connection attempt come in, but it doesn’t make it through the mod negotiation handshaking. Does it still work in single-player, i.e. can you create a new world, fly around and see the new terrain items, see the new items in the NotEnoughItems UI, etc? Otherwise yeah, there’s unfortunately no splash screen or logo change to indicate that Tekkit is actually installed and active.

Edit: Oh, and added marjamaa and benloran!

Thanks Fugitive. I already got it installed and checked it out, looks like it’s all working. It was surprisingly easy, too… I’m on a mac so I just used the Tekkit installer, no complicated instructions or anything. Looking forward to playing!

What the world needs now is…

Do we have any global goals? I’m having fun running around caverns and dying repeatedly, sometimes managing to make it back to home with the stuff I’m carrying…but having goals makes Minecraft more memorable. I’m wondering if we should come up with community goals to work on alongside our basically single-player fun.

I have a few short-term goals:

  • Get my house/workshop set up to automate a lot of the tedious crafting bits.
  • Secure the nearby village, monsters still spawn and wander in.
  • Run a road to the other nearby villages, to the south.
  • Get a large power source and teleport pipes going, so we can power things like quarries.
  • Get that skeleton dungeon I found set up as an arrow/bone farm.
  • Set up teleporters to any interesting locations.

Otherwise, I haven’t really thought of anything long-term yet. I don’t want anything to wind up feeling like an obligation, so it has to be something that people can just drop in and out of.
