Thanks for everything checkers.

I can’t get on to minecraft.net to download the latest server version, so sorry, server not going to be available tonight!

EDIT: The DDoS stopped long enough for me to grab the latest server jar. It’s up and running.

Interesting note about the near future of SMP from Notch’s blog:

I also want to make the portals able to teleport players between servers, both on different IPs and just to a different port on the same IP. Player equipment will follow through the portal and everything! (that will be agreed upon between the servers, so they don’t have to trust the client)

So, not that I’m suggesting a change, but this would have been an interesting solution to the Frontiersmen vs. Summoners thing (by having a separate server on the same IP but different port, linked by a portal).

Or (once it all works) a pure, creative server like we have now and one that is more survival- monsters, falling damage, etc.

That’s a pretty cool idea but… uhh… well, so much shit has already been built.

There is no point to having a link between a summoning and non-summoning server. There is too much temptation to move items across the border.

That’s why you mod it to strip the player’s inventory as they cross!

But yeah, keeping it on one server is one less barrier to having people just wander around and enjoy the sights on both sides, and split servers might keep people too separated.

the inter-server portal idea is interesting. you can explore a new server without having to start from the bottom again. or use it to bring in reinforcements for your ctf game. or any number of other things i haven’t thought of.

So I cross from the no-summon server with my diamond pick, then I come back and lose my pick?

You could make the same argument about the frontier border now.

This could be a cool idea. If we duplicated our current world, and then deleted the frontier one in one copy and everything outside the frontier in the other…

Well, when you join a server, you have the same inventory you last logged out of the server with. So changing via a portal should have the same effect, since you are still changing servers. I dont know if youd be able to move things across because your inventory might get refreshed. Assuming thats how it would work out.

You could do that in a Quake1 engine, setting the func_endlevel to execute a command like connect otherserver.com:26000 but such thing would be useless withouth something that guarantee that the other server will accept you, like the ability to reserve slots (so you are still on server A, but you have already reserved a slot in server B automagically, so wen you try to connect B, it always succeed).

The netcode changes that this “tiny” feature would need are big, so I see this more like a pie in the sky. Features that are hard to do, but add very littel, often are very low on the priority list.

Alright, I cave.

I love me some Minecraft, and would like to emerge from lurkdom just long enough to beg a whitelisting for the server to view some of these creations.

My Minecraft playername is: SWNut

For when it’s back up, of course. :)

Oh, we need to use our Minecraft registration name? Then, add cherryfunk if it behooves you to do so…

lol datter

Add Eurikins plz

Yay Euri!

Make way for butts!

Added SWNut and eurikins. Datter is right, who are these guys coming out of the woodwork?

Does anyone have a problem with me adding wintermuse?
