yep, purchases shot up 50% so far.
Please add smerm to the list. Old friend of mine.
I have begun laying track in the frontier. Sadly, the Gozer exhibit will have to be downgraded for materials.
About 2/3 of the minecart highway is up, if anyone wants to take it for a spin. I plan on completing it tomorrow night.
Now that it’s time to buy Minecraft before the price goes up, I’m not even that enthusiastic about it. Maybe I’ll get more excited when I play the full version in a month or two.
He hasn’t said anything to the effect that the update scheme (periodic incremental updates) would be changing with the move to beta. I think he’s using “alpha” and “beta” to refer to levels of functionality, without regard to stability or speed of updates.
What I’m trying to say is, don’t expect the ‘full version’ to appear in a month or so.
I meant full version relative to the browser version. I might not even get to it in a month so there’s no rush.
You can now ride a minecart a few steps from spawn all the way to the frontier, walk a few more steps through greek architecture, then take another cart from the frontier entrance to the medieval village. This changes the 10+ minute walk to about 3 minutes, with next to no attention required (assuming you do not hit any mobs).

Wow, that’s a lot of work. I never have ridden them before, so it was definitely a learning experience. I lost more than a few minecarts after “nudging” them as they raced away before I could jump in.
I did experiment with some powered minecarts to push me up hills, they sort of work, but sometimes not.
Great job BN!
Is it possible to get a top-down view of the frontier? I’d like to make a map.
I think you can grab the world save yourself from the server’s web site and then run whatever mapping tool you like against it. It’s a few hundred megs, though…
Just tried out the rail run from spawn to Frontier and it’s sweet, nice work! The only problem was when there was a loose cart on the track, so we have to be careful about leaving carts behind.

I have read this as rail gun.
I trougth… what rail gun? oh, probably a new mod for hMod that built one of these cow catapults made of TNT and 1 block of water. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeV0XB-w_yM)
Then, I have read it better… rail run. Anyway the idea is still doable, … create a canon that self-refill (or self repair) and that send people to big distances.
But… who need a Minecraft Rail Gun anyway?

BN- I cleaned up the tracks through my place a bit (I had no idea track wouldn’t go over glass) and I left you a little Christmas present out at the end of the tracks.
Thanks, Bluto. I didn’t want to disturb things too much.
If the physics worked I would absolutely build a minecraft rail gun. I’ll see how well a “double” booster will propel the cart. It may not actually be a gun, but damn it’d look cool.
I would like to add redstone switches to pull empty carts off the track, but they are too dependent upon timing. If anyone finds a switch system that still works with lag, I’ll implement it.
Minecart highway 1.0 is now complete. It might be short a few boosters and there are some one way intersections that need adjusting, so please give some feedback or feel free to add on. I’m too tired right now to figure it out without a map, and it will be a while before I can make one.

Against my better judgment I picked a copy of this up. Was of a similar mind to the idiots who were doing a denial of service attack on it in that I didn’t think there was (And probably wouldn’t be in the future) enough game to it, but the price hike and saying he’s going to charge for content updates in the future was enough to make me roll the dice.
After playing for a few hours, I really wish this was a roguelike. Still, having a fairly good time.

Playing on a SMP server I have learned that I am not of the type of person that want a “home”. It seems the type of person that wants to do science, and wander around, but that I don’t really have real motive to do anything that is not fucking amazing (like science). Is not good news, but Is probably a good thing to know it.
hopefully there will be more exploration oriented stuff added. i think thats my favorite part of the game, but once you’ve explored one cavern system you’ve seen them all pretty much.
He plans on adding an ‘Adventure’ mode that’s supposed to be much more structured and goal-oriented, but it’s still rather vague and who knows when he’ll actually get around to it.
I’ve kind of cooled on Minecraft for now since I’m not creative or patient enough for a megaproject, and there’s only so many times you can build a home/lighthouse/castle or clear a cave system, but it’ll be interesting to pick it up again in say a half-year and see what all is new then.
