I see it more as a way to give modders a early access to the next version, without making much fuss about it. And if it help to detect a ugly error before hit production, that is a nice side effect.

heya, noob to your forums. can i get added to the whitelist to check out your server/map?

longtime mod at another server that went down for a few days. server had hey0, /is, /isr, /isb, minecartmania mods (and another i dont remember)

we started a new SMP server while waiting for hey0 to catch up to Beta and now we’re loving it. so i found this server while searching for info on how to get into minecraft by using a server NAMe instead of an IP address and just wanted to see what other people are doing.

thanks in advance,

Without a posting history, you’ll need someone to vouch for you.

ah. anybody here from offtopic? :)

Now there’s an original forum title.

My multiplayer world just bugged on me. Where there was a mountain, a semi open mine, a stone wall and a glass dome atop, a wooden guard house and caverns, there is now this:

The game decided to cut down a hole to sea leavel and cut off everything from sky down to that level. That picture is taken from the remaining half of my guard house. you can see the broken down wall and so on. cry

I’ve seen another report of the same occurence on the minecraft forum. If you are not doing so yet, daily map backups might be a good idea. Now I need to decide whether to go back to the last back up and lose a day of the other player’s time or deal with my destroyed mine, wall, dome, …

EDIT: Found another occurence of the same issue in the world:

This thread suggests it’s probably happening in various places: http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=125754&p=1822179

Time to restore a back up and wait for some confirmation of what causes it then.

There is another time consuming option - pick out the specific corrupted chunks from your backup and copy them into your live world. Most likely you have a folder of chunks that got corrupted and that those chunks are widely but evenly spaced in your world. Use of an editor might help you track them down.

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll have to give that a try tomorrow.

But, erm, how do I go about finding out which are the corrupted chunks?

Wendelius

You can try a map editor or this Minecraft GPS mod.

The file names in the world folder tree are the chunks coordinates, but the format has them in base 36. So you will need to convert.

Why repair chunk errors?, you can think of then as the equivalent a disasters system with volcanos and floods, ala Sim City.

Because some people aren’t interested in Ironmanning fucking Minecraft.

Thanks caesarbear! Sounds like an evening of fun. :)

I might. On a SP server. But this has impacted the work of myself, friends and my sons. So I’d rather put a bit of effort into fixing their builds for them if I can.

Once modding is more stable, I will make a few mods to add erosion, destruction and chaos to the game.

Water sould erode dirt.
Lava sould “eat” dirt.

Both will create canyons.

A few new object sould be added to the world:

  • boulders… simply big rocks
  • stalactites, stalagmites

will make caves more cave like, and people houses more “tamed”

Volcanoes, and a system that create pools of water, mountain lakes.

Earthquakes that reshape the land much like chunk errors.

Underwater/undeground lost cities

Cursed totems that turn animals into vicious evil creatures, and corrupt the land around.

The general idea is that any minecraft world become co-authored by the player and the game itself. If a volcano erupt near your house, take it as a suggestion to build a volcano-evil-lair on it.

So to me chunk errors are features I want minecraft to include.

I like those ideas in general, but one thing I don’t want to see is the community to fragment around a few balkanised mods. We’re already seeing that, I feel.

Different people want different things.

Part of the public of Minecraft dream of FFA PvP of the worse type. Other public want Creative 2.0 (and I don’t understand why Notch don’t give these people that) and other people want a “Survivor Experience”.
These are the main styles, but seems theres also the “Faithfull Minecraft Experience”,… the people that want the original untouched experience.

Is not possible to please everyone with the same set of rules. You can’t have the PvP folks playinggriefing with TNT and diamonds blocks on the same server with the people that want Survivor Experience.

To be honest, I don’t like to share a server with people that “cheat” summoning blocks and building megathings out of diamonds blocks. It remove the “economy” part from the equation and make some horrible buildings possible.

Well that’s a relief.

Oh no, I was exploring the lovely new aqueduct and underwater complex out in the frontier (that must have taken a ton of work!) when I came across this:

Corrupt chunk, or deliberately dug that way? It’s weird in that there’s water at the bottom rather than a newly-generated mismatched chunk.

Oh, that’s mine! Yeah, it is taking a ton of work. The server’s been doing that with chunks lately, but it goes away if you log out and let the server reload the area.

So just to be clear, any problems on the qt3 server are transient and fixed by logging out and back in again?

In my experience, yes. We have other problems, but those are for Notch.
