Yeah, I wandered off and came back later and that area was intact again, though I then ran into missing chunks in an area I’d previously visited. Just another one of SMP’s current quirks, I guess, if it isn’t perhaps lag-related.

Theres a interesting mod (probably only for SP) that consolidate the chunks on disk on a more optimize way. Seems almost all chunks are less than 4k and 99% are less than 8KB, so you are doing a lot of disk access to read few data. The mod probably store a lot of these chunks on a single file, or other similar magic.
I have never tried to run minecraft in a ram disk, It could be a fun experiment :D (maybe even have a rsync task to sync the data on the ram disk with a real disk ).
Thank you!
My hole in the ground has gone back from this:

Thanks a lot for pointing me in the right direction.
I’ll keep a series of backups covering several days and restore any other such chunks I find.

So I can’t seem to find the beta version of the server software. The link on the download page works but when I fire it up it still claims to be 0.2.1, which I gather is pretty old. Is my Firefox cache gumming up the works or is minecraft.net borked somehow?
Edit: Nevermind. Firefox cache. But at least I killed phantom page 66! :P
Server appears to be broken, won’t connect at the moment
Latest update needs to be installed. Patience! It’s been less than a day!
Anyone know if hMod is getting updated, or when a “release” version of Bukkit is going to be available?
Ask the developers of said plugins, not us?
THe qt3 server is updated, btw.
Turns out that hMod is dead, and they’re just going to focus on Bukkit. No idea when it’s due out.
Now I’m kind of regretting doing all that exploring when biomes first came out, as now we have to go even farther out to generate new terrain.
So, in my new quest for lapis lazuli, I’ve started from the Triple Falls and placed a bunch of torch-and-cobblestone-pillar markers that lead to a previously unexplored area, if anyone else wants to search, too.
Total found so far: 15!

You beat me to it, I was thinking of doing the same thing. Thanks, I’ll head out there sometime and make the hole bigger.
Who loves cactus?

Now that it’s useful as a dye, I set up this little cactus farm by the boat launch/zombie arena. It’s not too efficient and only generates about 150 cactus/hour at the collection point (a little more if you run around and pick up the uncaptured ones), but that’s probably enough for dyes.

I wonder if you used glass instead of dirt if they’d grow faster?

It’d look cooler if it were all one level, like a big farm.
Also, did they ever fix water buckets and farming for SMP? I should log in some time and finish the lake in front of my condo.

They did Pogo. Thanks Fugitive, I need cacti for my underwater greenhouse, and now I don’t have to run across the continent for them!
I use a tower design for my cactus farm: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lY7e_ySpDwI
Similar result with the cacti falling down and being ready to collect.

I’m not sure I understand. Does a cactus hitting a ceiling break the top piece off and send it flying to the side instead of breaking itself on the lower bits of cacti?
Yep. It falls to the side.

The DNS name is failing to resolve for me now. I’m not sure if this is a temporary glitch or if someone needs to renew something.
