Phil Coke! Who’d have thought after all the struggles in mid-season that he’d finish off a shutout in the Bronx? And another incredible start from the Tiger rotation by Sanchez.

That missed call was pretty bad. But since the Yankees never got even one, the extra runs didn’t affect the outcome.

I’d love to see the Tigers win this thing at home, and they’re set up pretty darn well now.

Yeah, between losing Jeter, where ARod is at, and Cano’s issues, the Yankees are in a lot of trouble since they are a team built on offense. If they do lose this series it will be interesting to see what moves they make in the offseason.

On another note, the attendance issues are a bit of a surprise.

Seeing from numerous sources in Cincinnati that Scott Rolen is likely to call it a career, maybe announcing before the end of the postseason.

Poor guy. You have to wonder if not for suffering one freakish injury if he’d be a lock for the HOF–and still playing well. (His first injury was a play I’ve never seen before or since that led to the severity of the second freakish injury. I have seen other guys hurt badly in collisions at first base, most notably Derrek Lee, who’s career was also altered forever from colliding with Furcal at first in a weird twist of the karma knife.)

How long ‘til the Cardinals’ ride here turns to a pumpkin?

Lance Lynn’s biggest problem as a starter has been giving up 1st-inning runs. He gives them up in bushels.

If he gives them up to the Giants, I’m not sure they don’t have the pitching to make them stand up.

Series prediction: Giants in 6.

Matt Sebek ‏@MattSebek

Will Clark throwing the first pitch. On Wednesday, the Cardinals should totally counter with Will Clark.

Trigger, you are in full bore reverse jinx mode I see!

I’d like the Cards to win to set up a 2006 rematch if the Tigers make it, but since I am in SF I want the Giants to win so I can see a game.

Two things:

  1. What makes you think that the Cardinals in playoff baseball doesn’t make me physically ill to the point of actual suffering? I truly believe the stuff I post.

  2. Why on earth would I change at this point? ;)

I have no doubt it is tortuous to watch, but it sure must make it all the sweeter when they keep pulling out crazy wins!

Speaking of tortuous, back come the Giants…

My case: I rest it.

BUMGAAAAAAAARNERRRRRRR!

Cardinals have been very tough on lefties this year. So…that said I don’t think we see Zito starting game 4. I think it has to be Lincecum, and he owns the Cardinals.

I’m sure you’re correct, but something’s definitely wrong with Bumgarner. He’s been pretty terrible since August. I think he’s just gassed…he’s been pitching a lot of innings the last couple of years He claims not, but who knows? shrug

Hope he doesn’t burn out his arm before 25, though.

Catching up: yeah, that blown call by the umps in the NYY/Det game today was pretty bad, but as others mentioned, that’s not why the Yankees lost. This is just an annual thing for the Yankees, where they beat up on weaker teams during the regular season, win 93-97 games, and then stop hitting in the playoffs.

So now they go to Detroit, where their options are (a) beat Verlander with a lineup that’s gone into a coma, or (b) go down 3-0. I think “big trouble” would be an understatement. :)

“Madbum”. That was the best bit of the Fox broadcast. Which I realize isn’t saying much, with Buck and McCarver babbling away. I don’t suppose we’ll get different announcers until one or both kick the bucket. If I could get the timing to sync up, I’d stream Giants radio over the broadcast and be much happier.

The Tiger offense has been nothing to write home about, either. I don’t think JV is going to implode, but he can’t win the game by himself. I’m hoping being back in Comerica will wake Cabrera up a bit. He’s hitting .286 and doesn’t have a home run in the postseason.

Batting averages almost always go down in the post-season. After all, you are presumably batting against the best, rather than padding your stats against the worst. It would be nice for Cabrera to see some decent pitches, too–he’s been getting almost exclusively pitches inside and very low, which a .286 against isn’t bad. Its just really hard to drive that pitch with any power.

True. I’ve just been conditioned by how good Miggy has been. The regular season stats are incredible, of course, but even last year in the playoffs he hit .314 with 4 home runs. And a lot more walks, too, although with Prince behind him you can understand why there’s less of that this year.

On another topic, the Daily Beast has an article about Derek Jeter’s injury and the Yankees that I thought was pretty good.

Oh good. I haven’t seen too many articles on Jeter and how his injury will affect the Yankees so this should really shed some new light on things.

Jeter was injured?

Apparently.

If Tim Tebow injured Derek Jeter, would ESPN just supernova?

Only if he did it while playing for the Red Sox.
