Utley suspended for games 3 and 4, with the ability to appeal. In all likelihood he’ll end up serving his suspension at the beginning of next year which kind of defeats the purpose.
What’s the point of that? He’s rewarded on the field, and then MLB gets a ton of blowback so they try to “punish” him after the fact. They’d be better off just enforcing their damn rules.
Oh, yeah, the suspension is toothless and dumb, but what else are they gonna do?
Fix the damn rules in the offseason, that’s what.
Sorry, Mets.
MLB.com is reporting that the appeal will be heard before the start of game 3.
Utley will appeal the discipline, according to his agent, Joel Wolfe. The decision will be held in abeyance until the appeal process is completed, which reportedly will be before the start of Game 3. If enforced, the Dodgers would play one player short with a 24-man roster.
Better than having it drag on through the offseason, assuming it actually happens as they say.
Back on the field…good work by the Astros today! Assuming the Blue Jays hold on to their 5-0 lead and avoid elimination tonight, both Texas teams will be in action tomorrow with a chance to move on to the ALCS. I still would prefer to see Houston-Toronto, but I have to admit that there’s a certain appeal to a Lone Star Series.

baseball should just adopt the NCAA rule on slides- would allow for protection while still allowing a runner to reasonably make it tougher.
Chase Utley slid hard into Ruben Tejada. Back in 2010.
That time the shortstop walked away.
Wow, Astros meltdown in progress.
When the Astros jumped out to the lead, I thought “hey, karma from last year is finally catching up with the Royals”. And then the Astros bullpen decided to throw batting practice.
Woo hoo, Game 5’s for everyone!

Ha, at least somebody’s enjoying it. The Rangers starters look like they are in the same unready-for-high-stakes place they were in until Hamels came in and saved the season in the last game. And the dominating version of Hamels only shows up once every 3 or 4 outings, otherwise he can be counted on to give up 3-5 runs.

Try and say Schwarber without smiling. I certainly can’t!
Turns out Arietta can be gotten to after all. Nice inning, Cards!
Good night to be a team that wears blue! The Jays beat up on the Rangers, the Royals mounted an incredible comeback to beat the Astros, the Cubs outslugged the Cardinals, and the Mets are leading the Dodgers. (Though the Dodgers have a lot of blue, too, so that one’s kinda color-agnostic.)
Chicago set a major league record with 6 home runs, most in a single post-season game ever, and still only managed to win by 2. The ball was flying in Wrigley tonight. Nice to see both Rizzo and Bryant get going a bit on offense with home runs. Jorge Soler is an offensive juggernaut in this series: 4-for-4 with 5 walks in 9 plate appearances!
This Dodger-Mets game is turning out to be very entertaining!
Are the Mets fans chanting We Want Utley?
Aw, Cards. Very disappointed in you.
First ever postseason series clincher at Wrigley Field, been a long time coming!
I’m almost tempted to pull for the Dodgers to beat the Mets, just so that you’ll have to hope the Cubs win the NLCS. But I can’t do it, can’t hope the Dodgers win anything (at least, if they’re not playing the Yankees).
Also, the first time since 2009 that neither the Cardinals nor the Giants will win the pennant.

In fact the most recent team to win a WS out of the remaining teams is the Blue Jays in 1993 I believe.
