The day the guys put Fire Joe Morgan to bed was a black day indeed :(

We got Parks & Rec and Brooklyn 99 out of it, though!

True, Parks & Rec is brilliant. Brooklyn 99 is worth watching? I haven’t checked it out.

Is he really that bad?

In any case the Jays managed to get rid of Vernon Wells and his albatross of a contract, so there’s hope. And the GM who pulled off that miracle, Alex Anthopolous, has not had his contract renewed yet so perhaps the Rangers can hire him to move out the unmoveable.

That was undoubtedly the most brilliant baseball related (sports related) article I’ve ever had the pleasure to read. Thank you.

Seven more years at $15M/yr ($14M for the last two) - yeah, it’s that bad. For a poor hitting SS whose fielding has taken a turn for the worse. But he sure pats Beltre’s head well - that’s his main skill in my eyes at this point. SEVEN MORE YEARS!!!

They really thought high of Andrus with that contract. A limited no trade clause that becomes a full no trade clause if he does get traded. A team option that becomes a player option in 2023 if he’s traded or claimed on waivers. Wow. I miss the days of Ruben Sierra, Al Oliver and Julio Franco.

They signed him to the 8 year (?!?!?!?!?!) extension after his incredible 2012 season in which he hit .286, exploded for 3 HR, and set the basepaths on fire with 21 steals (and 10 CS.) But the real value came in his league-leading 17 sacrifice bunts which of course is the Rangers’ main obsession.

Wait, is he seriously the highest paid SS in the league? That can’t be right, right?

SS Rankings based on Total Cash

Holy cow! Jose Reyes could have provided the Rangers with the same level of defense for half the cost (and you get offensive production).

Jose Iglesias is getting about 7% of what Andrus is being paid. He batted .300 and is a helluva skilled SS. Yeah, Id be worried about Andrus’s contract.

Posnanski and Schur hit the 3-run homer. But Ben Lindbergh brings the bat flip. If you read one article about the 7th inning last night*, read this one.

*and you shouldn’t, you should read them all! Jeff Sullivan, Rob Neyer, all have their takes. Ben Lindbergh though…

Here’s another article about the 7th inning which seems to be done in a WWZ interview style. I don’t think the interviews are authentic but if they were that would be awesome.

Mets v Cubs - good for them! Good for “anyone but the Dodgers” me. LA gets $300,000,000 worth of wait til next year.

Season success!

Head east, Cubbies! It’ll be interesting to see what the Mets rotation looks like, after Syndergaard threw that inning in relief (and about 3 more warming up). Could mean Harvey and then Thor, instead of the other way around.

If you can take Andy Samberg, then yeah. Samberg is sort of the nucleus around which the rest of the cast orbits. But the entire ensemble is great, especially Andre Braugher. His persona in the show is teriffic.

It’s not right. I don’t know what is up with that site. Tulowiski is making 20 million this season for instance.

That site is crazy wrong. Reyes made 22 million this year.

Yeah, I believe that site is using his prorated contract for the season after the trade.

edit - it should be noted that Reyes has a baloon-style contract, where it is more in the later years than the early years.

yeah, it looks like they are just counting the Rockies payout which is something. From Cot’s:

Jose Reyes ss
6 years/$106M (2012-17), plus 2018 option
- signed by Miami as a free agent 12/5/11
- 12:$10M, 13:$10M, 14:$16M, 15:$22M, 16:$22M, 17:$22M, 18:$22M club option ($4M buyout)
- award bonuses: $50,000 each for Gold Glove, All-Star. $0.1M for Silver Slugger. $0.25M for LCS MVP. $0.5M for MVP. $1M for WS MVP
- perks: suite at home and on road
- Reyes to donate $176,666 annually to charity
- deal does not include no-trade protection
- acquired by Toronto in trade from Miami 11/13/12
- acquired by Colorado in trade from Toronto 7/27/15 (Rockies to pay remaining $56,295,081 on Reyes’ contract: $8,295,081 in 2015, $44M in 2016-17 salaries and $4M buyout)

Elvis Andrus ss
8 years/$120M (2015-22), plus 2023 vesting option
- signed extension with Texas 4/4/13
- $2M signing bonus.
- 15:$15M, 16:$15M, 17:$15M, 18:$15M, 19:$15M, 20:$15M, 21:$14M, 22:$14M, 23:$15M club option
- 2023 option guaranteed with 550 plate appearances in 2022 or 1,100 PAs in 2021-22 combined
- 2023 option becomes player option with trade or waiver claim
- limited no-trade protection (may block deals to 10 clubs beginning in 2016)
- if traded, Andrus receives full no-trade protection with new club
- may opt out of contract after 2018 and 2019 seasons

The other problem with trading Andrus (other than all that money, and it locking in the 2023 option, and kicking in a full no trade clause) is that Starlin Castro is presumably on the market and a heck of a lot cheaper (and better).
