MLB 2018 - Hope for a 7-game WS so they'll play on Halloween

Wow, indeed. Seems like just yesterday he was king of the hill.

Aw man, I was hoping to catch a game with Ichiro playing this season.

Maybe Dayton Moore can find Harvey a home in KC alongside fellow Game 5 hero Lucas Duda.

He just has to make it through the anti-porn seminars.

3,000 hits for El Hombre!!

So happy for Albert. What a great player, and terrific accomplishment.

I’m at that game. Mariners crowd gave him a standing ovation.

That’s awesome that you’re there. Getting to see a little history!

And of all the guys in the 3,000 hits, 600 HR club, Albert is the only one with more than one World Series ring.

So today against the Cubs, Jordan Hicks threw a 102-mph sinker to Kris Bryant. Bryant barely tipped the ball, which ricocheted off his bat and caught Yadier Molina square in the crotch. He had to be removed from the game, and although those kind of injuries sort of cause some light-hearted jabbing, this sounds like it is a very serious injury. Both his brother Benjie and Cardinal reliever Bud Norris put up “Pray for Yadier Molina” posts on social media last night.

I’m guessing it’s likely he’s done for the year, and his career may be in jeopardy.

EDIT: so all that tweeting (especially from a local STL sports columnist who tweeted at 11:30 last night that it was “devastating news” for the Cardinals) ends up being emergency surgery for Molina, with him expected to miss a month to 6 weeks.

Which yeah, that’s pretty rough. And I have NO DOUBT that emergency surgery on your boys is NOT a good thing at all.

With that said, some pretty irresponsible use of social media on that front by all concerned, but especially the P-D columnist in question. The Cardinals fanbase has had three active players die suddenly in the last 15 years. You don’t tease news with language like that and just leave it out there overnight for an injury that may result in a player returning before the ASG (though that would surprise me.)

Gretchen Piscotty, the mother of A’s outfielder Stephen Piscotty, passed away late last night from ALS.

Last night ESPN aired an incredibly moving story about what it meant to the family – and Stephen – to have him playing for the Athletics, so he could be close to home. A great watch, but have the tissues handy.

Danny Farquhar sent home from hospital today. Doctor optimistic he’ll actually be able to pitch again in the future, though he’s done for 2018 while rest and rehab takes place.

Amazing.

Ugh, MLB. This is a fairly shitty thing to do to your paying customers.

Yeah, I saw something similar about the Facebook game last week. I turned it on and was surprised to hear Orel Hershiser since he usually does the Dodgers TV games…turns out that was because there was no TV game. That game last week had no commercial breaks, interestingly. Maybe the TV guys saw that bit in the Facebook game plan and were like “no chance we’re airing that”.

My understanding is that the league has a certain number of games per year that they can legally pull from the local braodcasters, so they’ve decided to sell 30-ish something games to Facebook to broadcast live.

Which, y’know, it’s just a few games, I get it. But if this is successful, it’ll expand for sure. For those of us opting out of the Facebook octopus, it’s an unfriendly move from an entity that we pay a large monthly fee in order to be able to watch all the games.

Oh, boy, here we go.

Yes, going to make a few sacrifices to the baseball gods in hopes that the elbow responds to rest.

Yep, every team will lose a game or two to Facebook. Which…is what it is.

On the other side of things, however, the postgame 5-minute highlights package that MLB puts together for Facebook only is 1,000 times better than the postgame highlights package on MLB.com.

Assuming this isn’t meant to be sarcastic, which FB-only highlights are you talking about? Is there a page just for them? I don’t see anything that would match the description on the MLB page.

I think they’re specifically supplied to the official team pages on facebook, who run them.

The Cardinals, for instance, both share the highlights and have a St. Louis Cardinals Recaps page specifically for them.

Here’s the Tigers, for instance:

Also worth noting, those highlight reels are edited and posted usually within 90 minutes to two hours after the game, which is impressive turnaround.

Apparently don’t need a FB account to watch them, which is cool.

They are nice, expansive recaps, but they’re maybe a little too long. ESPN does recaps that are 1 minute or so. That’s perfect for highlights of a game not involving my team. Also, Quick Pitch is pretty good for a full league round-up.

I like the longer highlight packages, especially because they use audio feeds from the TV and radio booths of both teams. That’s a terrific touch.
