Mariners probably drove that price up, but glad they didn’t get that contract.
If anyone can figure out what the Rox are doing, I’m all ears.
Just to recap: last season they traded Nolan Arenado – who is less than a year older than Kris Bryant – to the Cardinals. They also paid the Cardinals $51 million in that deal.
And now they’ve signed Bryant, with a full no-trade, for 7 years, $182.
I’m baffled.
Giants just signed Joc Pederson.
Those games with the Dodgers are gonna be so fun to watch!

Does paying the other team count for luxury tax purposes?
It does not. Arenado’s contract is what counts towards the Cardinals payroll for luxury tax purposes, and the $51 million is the Rockies paying a porton of Arenado’s deal.
1 year- 6m. He might be a little overpaid, but that seems right about what Joc Pederson is worth in 2022.
If anyone can figure out what the Rox are doing, I’m all ears.
I assure you they have no idea.

This is the team that gave Ian Desmond 5/70 to play first base. There’s no understanding them.
Oh shit, I forgot about the Desmond contract.
To paraphrase a friend: “Sweet hayzoos”
I think that’s a solid contract. I was hoping the Cardinals – who remain desperate for lefty bats until prospect Nolan Gorman is ready – would kick the tires on Pederson as a DH/4th outfielder.
Welcome back Greinke, question mark

I’m so freakin excited. My all-time favorite Royal is back!
And it’s only a one year deal - Dayton somehow resisted giving his usual extra year (or more likely Greinke was only willing to commit to one year)
This is not meant to be snide, I’m bettin’ this is simply about making a splash and selling season tickets.
As opposed to, uh, winning ball games.
Same with Orioles and Correa.
…isn’t Alex Gordon? Come on man.

And as a reds fan we would love for them to even be trying to sell season tickets. As it is they must think there is a prize for having the lowest payroll. Ken Griffey Jr. will be the 6th highest paid player on the team this year and he’s been retired for 12 years.
Wow. What do they owe him?
I think it is $3.5m per year still.

He signed a 9 year 116.5 million dollar contract in 2000 but with deferred payments for half of it all the way out until 2024. It’s really just an accounting trick that the Owners then pretend like is against their current finances when the reality is they just pushed a market value contract forward.
The Cardinals owe Albert Pujols $1.5m per year for another year or two on the contract he signed with them in 2006, as another example of deferred payments in action.
It’s also worth noting that in a lot of cases, the deferred payments aren’t a constant from the end of a player’s service time. In I think both the Pujols and Junior contracts, there was a 10-year window when no payments were made, and then the deferred payments kicked in on a certain future date.

The prize is more money in ownership’s pocket.
I know it was never in consideration, but the CBA needed a salary floor or spending provision.
