Good work if you can get it.

Wow.

If it happens, that’s two teams that saw Correa’s medicals on that leg and said “Not at this price.”

One difference with the Mets that might come into play (and might be why Boras is playing hardball) is that Cohen publicly acknowledged the Correa signing and terms by name – the Giants never did. That could open Cohen and the Mets up for some kind of civil suit down the line and is Boras’s leverage to demand something close to the original deal terms.

And as noted above, vindication for the SF GM.

I am not a lawyer but I’d be surprised if his statements would lead to liability. If anything, they indicate a good faith effort to close the deal.

That said, as a Phillies fan, anything that brings anguish to the Mets is fine with me. Bring on the lawsuits!

It’s never really been heavily tested before and it is far from cut-and-dried, but there are elements of contractual law I guess that make professional sports franchises legal departments strongly caution club owners and officials not to acknowledge handshake deals and deals “in principle” until names are signed on dotted lines.

I think it probably indicates the opposite, if you’re on the other side of that negotiation. Boras may (may…IANAL, but I’ve seen a couple of actual lawyers say it could be an issue) be able to state that Cohen’s comments constitute some kind of agreement between the two parties that was then reneged upon.

Definitely seems like the kind of thing that makes lawyers do at least something of a facepalm. :)

To be fair you can always find a couple of lawyers who will say “it could be an issue” on pretty much anything. In the world of lawyerly wizardry, everything is an issue and nothing is non-contestable.

Yes. But the fact that you rarely, rarely see teams ever comment on a pending new contract (in an official capacity, not talking about “sources indicate” which is apparently fine) before that contract has been executed with signatures seems to indicate that it’s a little more than the scenario you’ve described.

Here’s senior MLB reporter with The Athletic, Ken Rosenthal, describing the issue Cohen’s comments may have caused, and why the MLB league hierarchy begs teams not to do what he did:

Cohen confirmed his apparent coup to the New York Post, saying, “We needed one more thing, and this is it.” Major League Baseball warns teams not to comment publicly on pending agreements, noting such remarks might persuade an arbitrator to side with the player in a grievance, a former executive said.

Trevor Bauer has been released.

Hendriks seems like one of the really good dudes in baseball. Hoping they caught this early and that he’ll make a full recovery.

The Carlos Correa saga has reached a conclusion. Probably.

He’s not a Giant. Not a Met.

Back to the Twins at 6 years, $200m.

Bit of a pay cut from those other two deals.

One of the craziest free agent sagas I think in the modern era.

The Mets must of really not liked what they saw in his physical to bail. Especially since he’s going back for a pay cut. I’m fine with this as the whole deal was weird to begin with. They had a killer FA even without that deal.

This also frees Baty back up. They must not be sold on him play 3B (He didn’t look great there) because his bat is certainly fine. He hit over .300 in AAA/AA. Keith Hernandez was practically humping the monitor every time he came to back because he loved his swing. Will be an interesting season for sure.

:) His leg must be holding on by a thread the way everyone bailed. Mets were like how bad could it be? We’re all in! Takes one look and ummmm ya… About that contract… Ya… Hmm…

Is there anyone worth signing left? I would guess not. AJ would have been a nice backup, but I saw he was taken in the last week. Eh

Yikes, the Mets deal really came down from the original reporting.

Woof man I want to see this xray!

The saga has concluded. Correa passes enough of his physical to make the Twins happy, and he’s back.

I’m with Mike Krukow: “I hope he hits 50 home runs in Toronto”

I wonder how much Angel Hernandez can be thanked for advancing the cause of automated strike zones.

It is astonishing how bad that man is at his high-profile, high-paying job, while being so vocal about how he doesn’t get the plum assignments.

Trey Mancini is still available. I can’t imagine he will be very expensive so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the Mets can grab him for depth. I guess it comes down to not only price, but if he’s willing to take a part time role. I also hope they give a proper shot to Baty. If he does well people will quickly stop caring about Correa.
