By the way, there’s shortcuts in Agartha. To get to transylvania, you enter agartha, turn 90 degrees left, and jump down. You’ll probably need to make two jumps. Sometimes I got lucky and did it in one jump. Protip - you land kinda where the reticle is. I am very bad at jumping games, I never had a Nintendo or Playstation!

There’s one mission in Transylvania that made me rage so hard I started cursing the game developer for being a massive troll.

Cost of Magic

Specifically, Part 4.

This mission should be done with friends in voice chat if only because of the joy that someone else has to struggle and experience the same frustration as you have.

You jump up these golden platforms, a real pain when it’s laggy. Then from that platform jump to another. I start to curse the developer. Then round the corner and reveals an entire spiral set of rings. If you manage that gauntlet you will see the quest objective on the left. On the right there is a tantalizing explorer lore. Failing that jump would mean doing the entire thing over. Fuck that lore.

I managed to get it but never read it. I wonder what it contains, maybe a picture of Bart Simpson going HAHA SUCKER.

The trick to that is to walk backwards to the edge of the platform, and sprint jump towards the next one, releasing w once you jump

Financial results for Funcom indicate that the transition to F2P for The Secret World has been a success with issue #7 slated for a summer release:

The first major content upgrade to use the new business model in The Secret World, ‘Issue 6 – The Last Train to Cairo’, was released in 1Q13 with very good take-up rate amongst players.

Awesome news. Thanks!

Yknow, i’m really digging this game. I don’t think the combat is as good as DC Universe, but the world more than compensates. In particular, as someone above said, the voiced cutscenes are often chock full of good dialogue. I find it somewhat strange and interesting that the casual swearing and personalization resonates with me in a way that most games dont…

As far as I’m concerned, TSW is the most immersive game I ever played after System Shock 1 and 2 and Deus Ex, and if you (the generic gamer) don’t play it through (I mean main story and side quests and puzzles and Dungeons up to Elite) at least once you’re missing out on a fantastic gaming experience, and also an addictive build system. Now that it’s f2p, there’s no excuse.

Gaming experience is very much enhanced by a powerful machine and a good connection though, it has to be said.

And also, now that it’s f2p, I’ve found that playing through on another toon with another Faction is almost as entertaining as first time round (especially if you’re somewhat familiar with the build system and can go after effective combos quicker without “wasting” SP and AP). Seriously good stuff - while the “magic” lasts.

The Secret World is awesome, but it’s not free to play–the box still costs money. Just didn’t want to confuse anyone who wandered into the thread.

Picked up TSW in a GMG sale the other day, and I’m really enjoying it. It’s an awesome single player horror-adventure game. It might also be a decent MMO, haven’t really gotten far enough to tell. Just running my guy around and doing missions on my own on Solomon Island has been a lot of fun, and there’s only been a couple of times when I’ve had to resort to googling for clues. Several of those times have been for combat help, because I still don’t really understand how some of it works. For instance, I learned today that you can avoid a big boss attack by breaking LOS with him, even if that attack’s AOE-shadow on the ground still shows you’re in range. I’d assumed in the shadow = dead and never tried hiding behind a rock, until I read a forum post about it. And of course I’ve had to check for investigation mission answers a few times, but I’m trying to minimize looking at spoilers. I’m not smart enough to figure everything out on my own, but I’ve done several of the investigations without having to spoil them, and they’re a lot of fun. Very glad they went pay-once-to-play on this one, that plus getting it at a discount brought me in, and it’s been worth it so far.

I’ve now had a chance to do some teaming with a friend, and I feel confident in saying that The Secret World is horrible at small groups. I haven’t tried dungeons so I can’t speak to larger groups, but if you want to do 2-3 people, you’re pretty much out of luck. Sure, you may be able to do a few missions out in the open world, but the combat will be really easy since there’s no scaling for group size. You can try to pull extra mobs to make it more interesting but that can go very wrong very quickly, and there’s no good panic buttons to allow you to recover. But worse than that, without warning you’ll run across “solo instances” during missions that force you to go into instanced areas alone. These are pretty well-balanced, so you’re going to be able to handle them with most characters, but that’s not the point…you’re forced to go it alone, not play with your friends.

I’m enjoying TSW still, as a single player game. But it’s awful in a small team. And I’m not hopeful for the end-game, which based on what little I’ve read about it appears to be the same old MMO loot grind. I’m glad I got it, and I look forward to finishing out the storyline mission, but I’m probably done with it after that.

I agree entirely with your point about small groups - I’m playing with a group of 3, and while we enjoy the main quests, getting dumped into quests where we each have to solo an instance is disappointing.

TSW does shine for small groups in the investigation missions - while they can be frustrating solo, being able to bounce ideas off your friends and solving the puzzles as a group is fantastic.

Yeah that was disastrous for the game I think. It’s interesting to see how SWTOR did grouped quests so well in comparison.

However, the team stuff gets really rather good in the dungeons. Normal dungeons are somewhat challenging, Elite dungeons require you to focus more on builds and teamwork, and Nightmare dungeons can be seriously challenging for PUGs.

Its on sale right now at Amazon for 9.99. How good is it solo mode? I had to give-up on Guild Wars 2 because of all the jumping crap that I have to do to over in that game. Aside from one of the previous posts horror story about a platform segment in the game, am I going to be required to do a lot of jumping in this game?

Not really that I felt. Getting to some of the Lore pieces (which are just optional collectibles) occasionally takes some jumping, but I never found it was jump-necessary as GW2.

And that one mission is optional anyway. It’s entirely possible to do all the content except for dungeons solo

Thanks for the info. Is it true install size is 40 gigs?

Yeah, I think it is. Lots of voice files and cut scenes.

1 year anniversary extravaganza this weekend begins on Wednesday and runs through Sunday with attendant bonsuses to XP, AP, and SP, along with store discounts and special doo-dads.

Also, the client and game are free if the $10 pricetag is too steep during that time, so if you want to try the game for free you can.

The email I got from Funcom didn’t mention that new players could get the client for free during the event. Is that confirmed anywhere? Might be a good way to get a few more people to try it. That game is definitely worth giving a chance to.

My email has some code with it - I wonder if thats the way to get the client for free?

No code on mine. It simply says (after describing the event): Your account is open and ready for play. Keep in mind that The Secret World does not require a subscription to play; all you need to do is boot it up and join the fun! If you need the client again, download it here.

Which is why I was wondering where it had been said new players could join for free. That would be neat.
