Can you hide in some foliage while they’re battling it out?

Maybe. Just this morning I was chasing a Tobi-Kadachi when I saw it run into a “room” with a Rathalos inside, so I declined to follow and just walked around a corner, not even in view of the combatants, to wait it out, but after a few seconds the Rathalos knew I was there anyway and swooped around the corner to sting me. -_-

Did you fart? They have a strong sense of smell.
It’s actually worse, if you can believe it. We found a few quests where you’d play up to the cutscene and it still wouldn’t let other people join nor would it let you fire off the SOS flare.
Returning from quest (important that you choose return and not abandon) did then add a new assigned quest to fight the same monster and we were then able to join as a party.
Myself, and two family members just grabbed this. Base game only for now. We’re trying to solo or just play with each other when on until we learn the game more. So I read squads were the right way to set that up. Difficulty, all on PC. So I go to the NPC, and she has no dialog for me. And I’m in a group as soon as I speak to her. Errrr Qt3?
Not that I dislike you all, but family will put up with: an old lady, running a fever of just over 100 (sick this week) still learning keys (total newbie to game) and two of us want to start w/o guardian gear to get a better feel of later difficulty. And I want to stop and gather everything. I’d just be really annoying to group with right now. I can solo when family not on, good learning time for me. But is my only option to make a steam group, and get my family to join that group, make it all our main steam group, and then play squad only when they are on?
Seems to be what I read, and if so uggghhhhh.
I read about that, and knowing I would be playing as a feces throwing large ape amused me far more than it should. I blame the fever.
Yesterday I was playing and saw some dung and said “yay”. My son asked why I said that, I replied that I had found some dung and I was going to get it.
Now, for comedic purposes, I could say he looked at me with a puzzled look in his face and shaked his head. But in truth, since he knows Monster Hunter, he nodded and said “cool”.
My granddaughter (age 2) was living with us briefly. I would let her watch No Man’s Sky if I was playing it. She called it the “Space” game. Until they added the update for animal taming, products and cooking. Then she watched me out collecting “poop”. She really liked watching space dinos poop. She is potty training right now too. So she knows poop.
Then it became the “Poop” game, when she’d ask me to play it so she could watch.
When my daughter (her mom) asked “WHAT?”
She clarified with “The Poop Cooking Game”.
She was not wrong.
Squads are kind of annoying to set up and not really necessary for a small group of people who are already steam friends. When you log in to the game just click on Friends Sessions and see if any of your family is online. If so, join their session. If not, make a new session and set it to “friends can join”.

No, no need to worry there. I hadn’t actually ever even heard of squads until now.
If they’re on you’re Steam friends list, that’s all you need. When you load up the game, just join their session. You’ll be able to leave on missions together or see their missions on the board and join them that way.
EDIT: I see Mike just answered that already. What he said. :)
Ahh thanks. That sounds much less annoying. Now to catch up to my brother!

You really should. Once you get a feel for timing and positioning (quite easy compared to learning other weapons) you can KO monsters like clockwork. I usually get 5 per hunt with Slugger 2.
I also like the hit and run nature of the weapon, it’s quite forgiving and doesn’t require any complex management or inputs so I can concentrate on the monster instead.
Yeah, I’d love to have a secondary option that’s better for “hit and run”, so to speak, but that retains the “heavy” feel I love so much in Monster Hunter. Gunlance has no real mobility. Switch Axe is great but it isn’t a “hit and run” weapon at all - mobility being its main weakness. Hunting Horn isn’t either, since you have to commit for most moves. It seems hammer might be the best choice.
Hammer is my favorite weapon by far. It has a simple move set, but its strict in where you want to attack. It teaches mechanics very well.

I’ve tried every weapon buy to my great chagrin I keep coming back to bow.

I played Insect Glaive originally but switched to Gunlance around MR7. Then when the Defender weapons came out I tried Charge Blade and finished the game with that. I was finally getting it down, but then I took a break until Iceborne so I’m going to be a total scrub with it again.
My problem is that between the two of them, I’ve really come to rely on shields. I am tempted to go back to the Glaive but I don’t know if I can handle not having my crutch, er, shield anymore.

Just go hbg so you can still have a shield.

Hmmm, there’s a thought. I only very briefly touched that and the LBG when I first started playing. I was worried the ammo would be a hassle so ended up moving on to other weapons. Might be worth giving a look!
Yeah it’s definitely unique. I don’t know any other games where one of the most optimal gun builds is to attach a shield and a scope to a shotgun.

I’ve tried some other weapons but I can’t seem to give up my dual blades. Everything else just seems so slow.

Sometimes dung pods just…don’t work. Loaded up a Diablos investigation and a Black Diablos was just chilling in the underground cave with the regular one. Dung podded him three or four times, nothing. Lost to fainting, loaded up the same investigation and he was there again, still completely impervious to dung pods. Good thing a couple kindly Japanese demigods joined up to save the day. Just had a Rathalos who would not fuck off despite like six dung pods when we were trying to capture a Bazelgeuse, and I’m pretty sure he actually killed the Hazel because we failed the quest with 9 minutes still left on our timer and neither of us had fainted. I didn’t even know that could happen
