It would be a stupid decision if it were true. It’s not at all true. Abslutely every mission can be played coop.
The hinky bit is that for just the story missions you need to go in and watch the cut scenes solo, then you can join up. That bit is cumbesome and was a poor decision, but you can work around it.
@Nesrie I’m not sure what HR you need to be to do Iceborne since I was around 107, but yeah, the armor should make getting there a bit more expedient if you want that. I imediately ditched all my High Rank armor and switched to to G rank right away. I think that armor is so people aren’t frustrated spending a ton of time crafting elder dragon armor just to immediately scrap it once they get to G rank.
@vinraith Sorry the changes don’t suit your play style, though you can definitely still Solo stuff to your hearts content if you want. If anything it now provides more of a challenge!
Profoundly. I have no idea what they were thinking, but you can’t join a mission with another player until after you’ve seen all the cinematics in that mission. That means the story missions generally must be played solo before they can be played MP. This doesn’t apply to the side content (expeditions, investigations), but if your intention was to co-op through the game it’s definitely a problem. There are (awkward) ways around it, but they’re a pain and leave you open to random people joining your game (and potentially blocking those you want to play with from joining).
Which is the absolute last thing I need. :)
Yeah. Not being able to launch a story mission as a group is really dumb. I moslty just PUG in MH so I don’t really notice that, but if you are trying to do those with a group it is annoying.
That said the story mission are a failry small percentage of the game, so it’s not the end of the world. I do wonder why they did it that way though. In older Monster Hunter games there were “Key Quests” and you did those as a group. I dunno.
You can always just wait until the cutscene is over though and then join that person’s quest from the quest board if you are in the same squad session though.

It is the most annoying part of the whole thing, and it makes no sense to do it this way… however you do not have to complete the mission for a coop. You just have to trigger the monster and then they can join. This works well if you are just slightly ahead of someone because you can wait, as I do, for them to trigger and then just join at that point.
If there is anything I would ask them to change is to know that while the MH regulars don’t mind this, there are several new comers that would just like a continuous experience with their friends and family they are playing with. The cut scenes, fortunately, get better later when you spend more time not doing heavy dialogue quests.
Wait, that works through the normal join interface? As in, no need for a signal flare (which makes the whole thing public and invites possible problems)? That’s worth knowing, if so!

Yeah if you are in their session, and you have already triggered it yourself before, you can join them. We used voice chat to let each other know when to try. I think I read others just failed their mission after that point so they could all join. You just need it to get to that one point and then it’s a free go.
In all my co-op attempts I must sheepishly admit I never figured that out. It’s probably too late to matter now, but thanks for that anyway - if I can ever re-interest my friends in the game it’ll come in handy!

God, what a kludge. Still, looking forward to it. We haven’t all played a game together since the original L4D.

I am not sure how familiar you are with MH, but the bulk of the game are not these main story quests. They just introduce the specific monsters this way. After that, you do a whole bunch of different missions, hunts, that are not like that at all. It’s only when it’s time to move on that this comes into play.
It’s heavy story questing in the beginning, so it seems like an ongoing hassle until suddenly it’s just a minor annoyance. I won’t really defend their decision here, but it’s a little more off-putting in the beginning than it really is compared to the rest of the game.
Which is consistent with a lot of things about this game. It’s got the most off-putting first 10 hours of any game I’ve ever ended up loving.
I co-op with my pals all the time. I spent the entire weekend playing iceborne co-op with two friends (story missions included). @Nesrie and @merryprankster broke it down well, but just to sum up, here’s the best way to co-op in MHW:
-
Join the same online session as your brothers.
-
Create a squad (which is MH’s equivalent to a guild or clan) and invite them (have to be in the same session to invite to a squad).
-
Every time you log in now, log into the squad session, it will be a session exclusive to members of your squad.
-
For Story Missions (called “assigned” missions) start mission, see cutscene, leave mission (everyone has to do this).
-
After everyone has seen the cutscene, one of you posts the story mission on the board, everyone will join.
-
Kill monsters.
As Nesrie and Merry said, the story is only a small fraction of the billions of hours worth of gameplay MHW offers. After you complete the story, co-op is largely effortless. And if the game sticks for you, most of the trillions of hours of gameplay will be spent outside of the story, which you will barely remember as a thing you had to do at the start that was kind of a pain but man monster hunter is so good that who even cares about that story and those cutscenes.
I had very high expectations for Iceborne. Like, insanely high. And so far it has exceeded even my wildest hopes.
It’s so good I don’t know where to start explaining how good it is.
These early, frantic days of iceborne are so refreshing! The meta is completely blown up. No one really knows what kind of gear is “teh best” so everyone is fashion hunting as god intended. The endgame is a mystery. The final boss is a mystery. (all of this will be spoiled by even dipping your toe into youtube so avoid it!). There are so many little secrets to find.
The four month delay for PC is so brutal. It’s a damn shame they didn’t get that figured out.
The one legitimately sad moment for me personally was setting aside my trusted Wyvern Ignition Impact…it was the weapon that taught me to love Great Sword. It’s rocket-powered glory enabled me to fell arch-tempered beasts, shoulder slamming into their enraged faces, landing the chunkiest of crits.
I now wield a Great Jaggras GS. A weapon crafted from the hide of the easiest of punching bags. I hate it so much that my beloved beauty has been replaced by this lowly thing…
Man, why are there too many games right now? Can’t justify buying Iceborne until I get through Remnant and Control…

I hear you. I guess that’s one thing to be “thankful” for on the four month PC delay. That’s what I’ll try to convince myself of, anyway! I’ve finished up with Remnant now but Planetfall is so good. And now my friends are wanting to play Borderlands 3, and ooooh look what’s that shiny over there…?
LOVING Iceborn so much! The rebalance to difficulty is so good. Monsters are tougher in general, but are also subject to knockback a lot more so you get those great fun “dog pile” moments, without it being too easy.
Like @Scott_Dobros I was expecting Iceborn to be good…but it’s even better. New armor, new weapons new skill possibilities with multi skill decorations. So fun! I also really like the layont of the new area.
Sorry to hear about your lost GS @Scott_Dobros, but I’m sure there is een better stuff on the horizon in G rank!
In conclusion Iceborn is next level awesome, and Barioth is still a complete jerk.

STOP IT! You’re killing me over here.
4 months will go by fast enough… It will be January 2020 before I notice it…

Is this a thing where it’s way better on PC vs. PS4 Pro? Or is it equal on both, or superior on one platform?
