I don’t have a PS4, so PC is my only choice, and the PC version won’t be released until January, so I have to wait. That’s all.

The superior one is obviously the Switch version…

I own the PS4 version as well as the PC versions. I found PS4 to be pretty relaxing to play and the community was really easy to work with when it came to PUGS. It’s what started me on my SOS kick.

Having said that, the loading times and visuals are better on PC compared to PS4 Slim anyway (Pro might be more comparable, not sure). I also prefer the controller a bit more over the keyboard and mouse except my wheely mouse sure lets me go through inventory faster… like to the point where I use a lot more of my items quickly and efficiently than I did on console. My disclaimer is I am primarily a PC player not console.

Cool thanks!

I have about equal time played on both, and I’m going to give you way more information than you probably want/need…

The PS4 pro actually does a very good job of looking great and giving you a solid framerate (there is an option to “prioritize framerate” over visuals, and it feels like it gets to 60 in most spots without any (to my eye) noticeable downgrade in quality). The load times are way worse, but some folks have fixed that by installing an SSD. Playing on a big TV over monitor is better, who doesn’t want to see these monsters on a bigger screen?, but the text on screen can be hard to read from the couch (there are a lot of menus).

To get a great looking version of MH with a respectable framerate on the PC, you need to have a pretty beefy system, and spend some time tinkering with the many settings. If your system can run it well, it will look amazing. Way, way better than anything a PS4 pro can dish out. It will also play better. Since the combat is animation based, better framerate = smoother combat. Load times are only a few seconds, and it’s somewhat easier to connect through steam with your friends.

However, the player base is substantially less on the PC. While it’s not a huge problem, it is way easier to find full rooms with chill players on the console. There also appear to be (and this is totally antidotal, I have no hard numbers to back this up, just hundreds of hours of game time) way more Japanese players on the console. Which may not seem like a big deal, but I find it cool to play with super good hunters who are chill AF.

The console also gets all the free DLC way, way earlier than PC. Which is a huge f’ing problem because on PC you don’t get to experience the freshness and discovery of a new monster, event quest, etc. By the time the content gets to PC, the community has figured everything out, the meta is set, and you feel like you’re just following behind the crowd.

PC gets mods. So that’s a huge plus if you use them. But I think most mods ruin the game. I have a friend who insists on running damage meters (which he posts at the end of the hunt), health bars for monsters, etc., and it just absolutely ruins the game for me.

TLDR;
MH on the console feels to me the way MH is intended to be played, with discovery, a large, chill community, and on a bigger screen. But the PC version looks so, so much better, load times are quicker, and it’s easier to connect with friends. I can’t really say which is better, and I love the game enough and have enough PC exclusive friends that I’m happy to buy both versions.

I still haven’t found a worthy replacement! I’m trying for this Narga GS, but I can’t get a Narg mantle to drop for the life of me, and for some reason the melder isn’t offering it up as a meld option yet…

One minor complaint (and it really is minor) I have about IB is how some of the weapon trees work. Most trees continue into MR, offering one or even two more ranks of a weapon. And that’s a great design decision! Instead of having everyone completely throw out all the awesome weapons they worked so hard to make/upgrade, they just continue the upgrade path. Love it. However, some of the newer monsters branch off of older monster trees, and if you haven’t upgraded down that tree yet, you have to go back to HR and farm mats to make those weapons.

For example, I want to make this Brachy charge blade. But it branches off the Great Girros tree. And I never made any Girros weapons. So now I have to go track down some HR Girros and grind out some mats.

And I’m cool with doing that, but sometimes it’s hard to find a quest or investigation for those monsters, so you have to go back and farm tracks a bit. Which is something I kinda don’t want to do when there is so much cool new content I want to tackle.

Anyway, don’t delete all your old HR investigations is the moral of this story I guess.

Totally agree. He’s been the hardest matchup for me so far, and I’m currently working on four star quests. I like that they offered up a pretty major gear/skill check right at the front of the game.

Merry, not sure how far you are yet so i’ll put this behind spoiler tags, but if you’re in four star…have you fought Ebony Odogaran yet? Most people are saying he’s the first real “wall” the game throws up to check you. I found it a pretty challenging fight, but managed to get him down without carting. I have fought a lot of regular Odos before, so maybe that had something to do with it…

I think maybe a lot of players have been reluctant to toss out their HR gear in favor of MR, so maybe that has something to do with it. I went into the fight with a full MR set and 700+ defense.

Is there a QT3 squad?

Sorry for the fourth freaking post by me, but I got MH fever…

Tip: I’m keeping my bout of fever in check here by harrassing forum people on Steam chat about MHGU.

I love it when people write small essays. That is fantastic information and helps a ton. Thanks! So on which platform do you think you play the most?

Oh whew, I’m glad you found it helpful.

Prior to IB, my time played was split pretty evenly between PC and PS4 (300/350). I have more friends playing on the PC, and due to the way scaling worked in MHW, I favored PC. Also, it just looks glorious on the PC, and the added frames really makes a difference.

Now that they’ve fixed the scaling issues, I think I may favor the PS4, but for largely subjective reasons (i.e., my best bud is playing on the PS4 and now we can reliably fight and farm monsters together).

I know a lot of MH vets rave about it, but as someone who started with MHW I just couldn’t get into it. I tried!

I have a Squad going if you want to hop in. My PSN is the same as my user ID. I’m still in MR3 quests though.

Velkhana lives up to the hype…

Switch Axe new moves are so good.

That’s my main and you’re not making the wait until January 2020 any easier. ;)

Ooof, sorry!

I’m really not trying to rub any of this in for the PC players, and I guess Merry is the only other person playing right now, but I’m just so damn excited by what I’m seeing…

I crossed a point in the story/progression where I can chill out a bit and start clearing optionals, running investigations, and building sets. In no rush to reach endgame, but I wanted to have enough of the first wave monsters available so I can chase decent gear.

For the next phase of the game I’m sure I’m going to need better sets and weapons.

Of the new monsters I’ve faced so far (over a dozen) there hasn’t been a dud in the bunch.

Don’t mind me, I love the enthusiasm, and I’m glad you’re sharing it here. Just be mindful of our (PC players) suffering. ;)

Oh I’m mindful. Half my online buds are in the same boat.

Do you want to know about the new switch axe moves? Or, do you want to discover it for yourself?

I know they exist, but not their nature… yet. I have no real reason to know more about them now since I can’t play, but I’ll certainly look them up in January 2020. ;)

BTW, did they add tooltips or tutorials for the new moves in the training area?
