I don’t know how things are gated in World, but while you may be doing “fine” in the early game (called Low Rank before), if you don’t learn what to do right, you won’t stumble your way through the two other Ranks (High and G). Don’t you worry!
Odogaron, the spazz dog. If you did well with him, then yeah, you’re probably better than you’re giving yourself credit for. Spazz is tricky because of the speed, the health tics from the area you fight him in, and the bleed he can inflict.
He telegraphs his moves pretty well, and doesn’t hit too hard, but it can be a tricky fight nonetheless.
If I remember correctly, I think the first real “wall” in low rank is Diablos.

I think I found what you’re talking about. It liked to BBQ me. I didn’t fair well in my first encounter. :-)
It hit pretty hard.
It was the other one - it breathes fire that beat me pretty good. I think I ran into a Diablos earlier, not for a mission and did OK, but when he ran away I didn’t pursue him because I was looking for something else at the time. He may have killed me later had I went after him :-)

I may need to farm for materials. I’ve been avoiding it so far - just crafting what I have materials for. Some of my current high defense armor isn’t great vs fire. Crafting a dragon damage weapon looks like it would also help. I’m using a longsword with just normal damage right now (I think around 330 points of damage).

I do farm in this game but it never feels like farming. It is something I’ve actively done though to get specific gear. I am pretty sure that’s normal.
Him and shock squirrel… ugh.

I beat the game fair and square, I’m well into high rank, the flagship monster is mostly easy at this point, and I can hunt most elder dragons without breaking a sweat.
I still have trouble with Diabloses. Go figure. ;)

Got the first one, Rathalos - now I need to get Diablos.
Man he would not die, and then he’d fly far away. I was under 5 minutes left my health low and poisoned. I tried to delay healing myself because I got the 5 minute warning what felt like ages ago. At a couple points I had to heal and just kept wailing away on him and he finally went down. That was a relief.

I’m not sure that the thing I thought was Diablos earlier was him. I just got smashed pretty quickly :-)

The first time i encountered Diablos… I didn’t know it. The ground just exploded underneath me and another monster. I was dead. I finished the hunt and then only knew I encountered him because I got the credit at the library. It was pretty cool.

Yeah, my first time with Diablos was similar. I was hunting something else in the desert area and the ground just exploded. It was spectacular.

I’ve come to determine that Diablos is a bastard and definitely the hardest thing I’ve faced because he hits so hard. I don’t have an ice weapon. I was using a dragon longsword on him but ice is 3 star weakness.
I wonder if someone like him is better fought with a ranged weapon because getting close to him its real easy to get hit.
Usually, the game is balanced so that tough adversaries for brawlers take quite more damage up close than from a distance.
The important thing is to not waste your hits on lame parts and time them properly: if you are used to hit any parts of a monster, you d be surprised how little difference all those hits make, compared to a single strike on a weakpoint.

Nah, Diablos is fast enough that even with a bow it can be trouble. I had an easier time (easier, not easy) with the Insect Glaive or Gunlance, but even then, it can be pretty tricky. In the end, you need to observe Diablo’s behavior and use the tools at your disposal, which is why it’s such a great monster to “get in the mindset” for higher-rank play in MHW.
And here’s something I’ll blur just in case because it’s a monster spoiler somewhat: if you think Diablos is bad, just wait until you see the Black Diablos.

Bow main says amen to that. That SOB is night impossible to dodge, even at range. It helps to get some extended dodge range gems going, but until that was an option I spent a lot of time on my ass even when I was successful against Diablos.

I keep meaning to ask…There are skills on armor pieces with numbers next to them. Are the skills unlocked when the armor is upgraded to that level, or does it have to do with pieces equipped in a set, or something else?
Is there any benefit to wearing all one set? I’ve been going piecemeal building better armor as I get monster parts.

I’ve been looking for a Tobi Kadachi for the last hour in the ancient forest. I need its part to work my way up to a cold weapon. None up by its nest area. I’ve wandered around. If a monster lives in the forest, is there always one somewhere in the forest?
Edit: Never mind. I saw on the map where it shows what monsters are at the location.
Not sure what numbers you’re referring to. Is it this?
Lv 3 is the total level of fire resistance you have based on your equipped pieces with that skill.
You can see the Level Breakdown on right shows the three pieces that make up this skill level, and below that the effects of the skill level.
Some have set bonuses for wearing a certain number of pieces, e.g. wearing three bits of Anja armour gives you the Adrenaline effect. You can see this in the screen above as ‘Anjanath Power 3’
Are you talking about on expeditions? No, I think it’s somewhat random and not a great way to hunt anyway. You need to do quests that guarantee a monster type if you want to farm one.
You can replay Optionals, or see if you have any Tobi Kadachi investigations at the Resource Centre.

Ah, ok. So some skills from equipment are given just for having it equipped and and other are based on number of pieces in the set equipped. Thanks!

OK, I think I’m going to need to take a break from the game. I played it a lot lately and Diablos is a pain in the butt. I need to do quite a bit of farming to get a cold weapon to exploit his weakness. Seems like a good point to take a step back and play something else.
I hurt my foot playing tennis so I haven’t been running and walking like I had been, so I had extra time to play over the last several days.
Big man claims another soul.
Target the head (you can break the horns), tail, play for mounts, use the environment, use screamer pods, buff yourself, play defensively, don’t be afraid to run/superman dive.
Like @rhamorim said, Diablos is the transition into higher level play.
A good measure of whether you’re under geared or not is if fights are taking longer than 35 minutes. If that’s the case, and especially if you’re coming up against the 50 minute timer, it’s time to get a better weapon.
Elemental melee weapons (besides dual blades) are kind of a trap. The way the math works, it’s almost always better to just go with a high raw damage weapon.
