Just did some investigations with the bros. Man, dual blades seriously rip ass, wtf. I want the great sword to be better than it is, and I know long sword is supposed to be great but it’s not really gelling with me. Hunting Horn is Hilarious.
I feel like Dual Blades are always really good, but I never playing them much. GS for life!
I actaully think GS is pretty good in Iceborn, though I may be biased. I’ve seen a lot of gunners lately though, and they are wrecking shop. Might be time to build a gun rig.
Anyone know the meta these days on Light vs. Heavy bowguns? Traditionally I’ve favored Heavy, but light might be fun too.
The expansion content is really good. Enjoyed most of the new stuff. The post-game mode still has the same problem with early game monsters as the original tempered monster hunt, though - unfortunate they didn’t find a way to improve that.
I agree, GS is fantastic in Iceborne. I mean, it was pretty great in base world as well, but the few smart tweaks have improved it dramatically.
HBG Meta is the zinogre HBG. With three shield mods and guard 5 you get a lance shield. It’s apparently way overtuned, and has the highest DPS of any weapon. Clear times with it are matching or exceeding the top melee speed runners.
It is, at least until you meet Teostra/Lunastra and Kushala Daora. ;)
Iceborne is available for pre-order on Steam now, and the main game is 50% off.

Which is kind of a dick move, if I may say so. I’m not great with any of the melee weapons, and don’t enjoy playing them near as much as the bow even when I do find a level of competence. Letting me play through the whole game with bow only to slam the door shut right at the end and say “nope, melee only!” just seems like jerking me around. I mean, I don’t guess they’re any better with bowguns, are they?
Well, it’s not impossible to beat those monsters with a bow, quite the contrary; it’s just more difficult than what you might be used to. You might have to adjust your “kit” and builds around them though, and that’s part of the game. But those monsters are kind of a “speed bump” in the feeling of bow overpoweredness, or at least they were to me. YMMV.
See, the bow never felt overpowered to me, so much as it felt like something I was half-decent with. :) So basically those critters are a massive difficulty spike which, yeah, kind of frustrating.
In all seriousness, are the qualities that make those monsters difficult for a bow also going to make them difficult for bowgun? I enjoy this game so much more with ranged weapons, partly because I can actually see the monsters!
Well, Teostra and Lunastra are fast. Really fast. A bow user can usually react pretty easily to other monsters attacks and get out of the way. With those two, it isn’t nearly as easy. That makes using the Dragon Piercer a big risk, and if your gameplay style depends heavily on that, you’ll have to adapt. They’re also considerably more unpredictable than other monsters. Think Diablos, but faster and with more tricks and you’ll get an idea.
It could also be that I’m a terrible bow player, and that’s really possible. I’ve seen people saying that their favorite weapon against Kushala Daora is bow, so you might be fine.

I have still only scratched the surface of this game, and yet I must agree that bow does not feel overpowered to me, in fact the opposite. Perhaps this will change, but I feel much more secure in general taking a monster on solo with the Lance than I do the bow. In fact I found the Tobi-Kadachi basically impossible to solo with bow. Too fast with too many little poking attacks that would interrupt my draw.

Meanwhile, I’m 50+ hours in and reaching 7* quests, and haven’t even gotten around to trying the bow yet. Every other weapon I’ve tried has become my new favorite as long as I’m using it, though!
The “main” bow draw is functionally the weapons secondary attack, spread shot is MUCH more useful against something like Tobi. With a water bow, you can really screw sparky up.

Is building a water bow at that stage in the story even possible?
I don’t remember. I don’t think I had one the first time I fought him, regardless. It’s certainly doable without elements, I suck and managed it, but it’s definitely the most challenging fight up to that point with a bow.

Yeah I just said screw it and pulled out the Charge Blade and he went down easily.
Suffice it to say that, for me, anything other than the bow (or a bowgun) would have been much, much harder.
