I avoided reading about Iceborne up until last night because I didn’t want to be tempted to buy the PS4 version. Pretty psyched about the new changes. My PC character has been HBG and I’ll be sticking to that. Can’t wait to put a scope on my shotgun!
You will be VERY happy in IB. There is a late-game spread 3 HBG (with WYVERN HEART) that is so good it’s borderline broken. Looks amazing too. Made me a HBG convert.

Is there any rhyme or reason to the way you will sometimes, on getting tossed from a monster you’re riding, grappling hook your way back on? It’s happened to me a couple of times, and I have no idea what if anything other than randomness triggers it. I don’t own Iceborne.
So the short answer is yes, Guilding Lands: a dedicated endgame area that turns the entire endgame loop into one giant expedition where you unlock endgame only monsters (each biome has what I’d call an endboss), the best pre-seige weapons in the game, and cool cosmetics, that you can drop in an out of with friends/pugs or just solo.
But the longer answer is that the endgame comes in different waves, starting with the true endboss of Iceborne, an almost siege-like encounter. I don’t want to spoil too much, but the way they structured the endgame flow is pretty f’ing great.
Yeah is that the Zinogre gun? That’s the one I was reading about. Sounds awesome.
That’s the one! A spread 3 with wyvern heart that also has the equivalent of a lance shield. It’s WILD.
Time to get back on this horse! After the 80GB download.

So if we didn’t actually buy it, why is it pushing a download?
I’m guessing it’s like many online games, where you need to download most or all of the assets, so you don’t get a bunch of broken models and textures when you run into a player in new gear. You just won’t be able to access the new areas or craft the new stuff.

It’s incredibly obnoxious to get a 80 gig download for something I didn’t even buy. Now don’t get me wrong. I will get around to it, eventually, either PS4, PC or both just not… yet.

That really does seem excessive. Like, even if they were just “lazy” and dumped all the assets for the expansion, is Iceborne itself really 80GB of new content? The base game is is 30GB, per the Steam page (assuming it might be larger now due to added content).
EDIT: Steam lists 48GB for Iceborne. Weird.

Yeah I did not buy Iceborne and look what kicked when I told Steam to do all my downloads today while I was working:
I’d be super pissed if I was short on space, and it did that.
Yeah this was super-obnoxious. I’ve got the base game and got a (compressed) 40+ GB patch download today. My 6 TB spinning game disk is within 60gb or so of full & the install din’t go at all well.

Steam forums are saying the install size is much less if you right click properties and uncheck the high-res texture pack under the DLC tab.

Well of course I want the high texture pack for the base game, the one I bought. I just don’t know why I have 80 gigs for the DLC I haven’t bought. That can’t possibly be just armor I might run into from players who did buy it.

Question: someone starting the game with the expansion, is there pre-expansion content to mandatorily go through or does iceborne have pre-max level content?

Iceborne is endgame/master rank stuff after you beat the original game.

You got a long ways to go; with the expansion though, you’ll probably have plenty of company.

I’ve thought about getting back into this on the PS4 but the vast number of controls, systems, etc has been keeping me from jumping in. All this Iceborne talk is extremely tempting though!
Like Kevin said, you have to play the base game. They did add a new set of gear you can get early weapon that makes you crazy OP up until Iceborne so you should be able to blast through it pretty quick.
Or just use regular gear and take your time. The base game is still great.
