I saw this at Gamestop today whilst returning Petz Pawz and Clawz Super Vetz or some such nonsense that my daughter picked out last week. I came home with Raving Rabbids, but I remember seeing a preview of Monster Lab for the Wii on Fidgit and then I totally forgot about it. It’s got scores in the 70s, which I guess means terrible, but there are less than a dozen reviews out there. Anybody picked this up?
I keep waffling on picking it up or not. Bill Harris had a nice write up but it’s mostly from the perspective of a kid less than 10. Anybody of drinking age and beyond given it a whirl?
I read Bill Harris’ post a while ago and ordered it for my son (age 7). He likes it a lot was making good progress before Little Big Planet knocked it out of his sights. We’ve talked about getting back to it, and I think we will.
It was interesting enough that I played through the first area (about an hour or so), and would like to keep going as well.
Some thoughts…
Building monsters is fun. Fighting with the monsters you build is fun. The game oozes charm and style.
It’s ridiculously easy (so far anyway). Without any help from me, my son has gone something like 30-1 in battles. I’ve been playing a “house rule” that says I can’t repair and heal monsters between fights, and that’s made it a bit more challenging. How well this rule will work over the whole game remains to be seen.
I think the fighting and mini-games will get pretty repetitive well before the main game ends.
There is a lot of trail-and-error to getting optimal parts for your monsters, but I don’t really think you’ll need optimal parts to beat the game.
Bottom line for adults: if you like battling games where you slowly build up your fighters’ attributes, this is probably worth a shot at $20 or less.
