Mosaic (HBO series by Steven Soderbergh)

There’s a lot of hoo-hah about it being ‘interactive TV’ with an associated app or something. As a gamer I find this sort of thing rather painful so I haven’t done anything other than watch it as a straight TV show.

5 episodes in, it’s got its ups and downs, but I think Devin Ratray’s Nate Henry is emerging as one of the great TV detectives. The archetype – seemingly non-threatening, schlumpy cop gets where he needs to go by sheer plodding persistence and more smarts than anyone gives him credit for – is at least as old as Columbo (and in fact probably as old as Dogberry in Much Ado About Nothing), but this feels like a new spin on it. There are some strictly character-focused scenes that add a lot of depth and are very well acted – like one where he has a near-nervous breakdown after a confrontation with an ex-boss.

It’s also the most interesting thing I’ve seen Sharon Stone do in ages. Not that I’ve seen her do anything else in ages, come to think of it.
