Motor Trend Responds to Rush Limbaugh

Rush slams Motor Trend for giving the Chevy Volt the Car of the Year award.

Motor Trend responds.

My question is “How does a car that’s not on sale become car of the year?”.

I would think actually being available to customers, even if only in extremely limited numbers, would be a prerequisite. After all, if it’s on sale next year you can name it Car of the Year next year, no?

It doesn’t matter if the car is out yet or even if it is a good car. The award is a straight up popularity contest. They (Motor Tread) specifically gave it the award because it is so ridiculously hyped. Getting upset over it is stupid.

I’m confused. Did Limbaugh complain because the car wasn’t available yet or because GM got a government bailout?

If you read the article it sounds like Rush is complaining about the Volt because it potentially leads to cleaner air, which Rush, being a typical right-winger is against – global warming and poor air quality all being a left-wing invention pushed on the nation by Al Gore.

Last time you ranted about the Volt, you got confused about the “range,” and said on the air that the car could be driven no more than 40 miles at a time, period. At least you stayed away from that issue this time, but you continue to attack it as the car only a tree hugging, Obama-supporting Government Motors customer would want.

Rush Limbaugh is a cancer on this earth.

That statement isn’t even consistent with itself. It doesn’t matter that the car isn’t out yet because it’s not a popularity contest. It’s an award given by Motor Trend based on their own internal testing. I mean, I guess it’s a “popularity contest” in the sense that every critic’s opinion is a “popularity contest,” for whatever that’s worth. Not much, IMHO.

“Game X isn’t even out yet, and Tom Chick is raving about how much he loves it? Pfft. Popularity contest.”

Slam.

By the way, this article is pretty awesome. It owns Rush really fucking hard, in a way that the quotes in the OP don’t fully represent.

That was an incredible slam. The final closing line about Oxycontin was the perfect way to end it.

No. It’s more like “Duke 4 isn’t even out yet, but everyone is raving about how much everyone loves it. Popularity contest.”

It’s “like that” if you enjoy bad analogies, perhaps. Did you read the blog post, or the Car of the Year article? This isn’t some vaporware-hype thing. They didn’t give out this award based on buzz. They have the car. They’ve tested it. They are driving it around in the video. It’s no different than a game reviewer getting a game before the public does, and reviewing it. You may disagree with their conclusion… though I guess that would lead me to wonder what basis you have for disagreeing with their conclusion. Have you driven the Volt?

Did I say they didn’t test it? Maybe you should stop putting words in my mouth, because I have read the article. My problem with this car is they did a limited review on it, and already declaring it the greatest car of the year because of, as I said before, its hype level… and guess what… SO DID MOTOR TREND.

In the 61-year history of the Car of the Year award, there have been few contenders as hyped – or as controversial – as the Chevrolet Volt.

Actually, you know what? I don’t even have a problem with them declaring it car of the year. I really don’t care, it seems like a valid reason as any.

Yes, you did say that. Or you directly implied it, when you said that it’s analogous to calling Duke 4 the game of the year merely because everyone is so excited about it. If that is not you saying “Motor Trend’s award is just like giving an award to a piece of vaporware that nobody has played, just because people are excited about it,” then you really are terrible at analogies.

Wow, that quote is not out of context at all. Yes, AB, that’s why they gave it the award. And what exactly do you mean by “limited review?” Did you read the whole thing? There’s seven more pages, you know, with all the specific details of their testing, and the results. It’s not like they just kicked the tires and said “Yep, car of the year!”

You know what? I’m done here. Have the last word, if you want.

Okay. They gave the '02 Thunderbird car of the year. It’s a bullshit award. Deal with it.

It’s a well known fact that if you’ve ever been wrong about anything you are automatically wrong about everything.

I don’t really think that giving the Volt a bullshit hype award was wrong, but if you say so.

But since A-B is never right about anything, where does that leave us?

It means we have to find Bunny so we can ask him about stuff like this.

Then the forum explodes.

Whatever. It’s a stupid car magazine with questionable reviews, and I don’t really understand everyone’s rush to defend it. Car magazines are about one step above car audio magazines. When Consumer Reports gives it a recommendation, then I’ll be impressed.
