The other day I discovered that I can’t see videos play in Windows Media player anymore, although I do get sound.
I also can’t see videos in the DivX 2.1 player, although amazingly, I can play videos in Windows Movie Maker, but only if I hit play, then stop, then play again. Could this be because I installed the DivX 5.1 bundle?
I reinstalled Windows Media Player 9, but that did nothing. I also noticed that there was a strange entry in my uninstall programs control panel that had the same icon as Windows media player but had a wierd name that I don’t remember. I uninstalled this.
It might be that you could be missing a video codec or possibly one of your codecs are conflicting. Try using this program to check the file you’re trying to play and see if you have the codec required to play it.
I had this. It’s very annoying. Letting WMP update the codecs doesn’t work. Install the latest version of the DivX player and everything should be fine, even in WMP. Choose Divx Free from this site.
Well, ever since I came out of the closet as a firewoodsexual (someone who is attracted to big piles of firewood) I’ve been collecting a lot of firewood-porn.
I’ve got about 20 mpegs and avis of big sexy piles of firewood, 30 mpegs of firewood splitting, and about 10 tree-surgeon videos…you know, cutting down trees, sawing them up for firewood.
There’s this one voyeur video where this dude sneaks up to different peoples’ houses and videotapes their fireplaces through the window. Then there’s one where a guy pulls tarps off of firewood piles really slow.

That is too funny. Is this an example of early SpoofyChopness humor (per the Koontzian view) or a humorous slice of the contemporary SpoofyChop?
It would help if you guys posted what codecs the videos that are failing to play are. If you’re running XP, just right click and look at “Summary”.
For most of the more common codecs out right now, though, what you want to do is
Uninstall any codecs you’ve installed (DivX, Xvid, etc.)
Download the ffdshow alpha at [url=http://www.dawnload.net/video_software/subtitle_tools/ffdshow.cfm]
Download the Nimo codec pack Build 9 Beta 1 at [url=http://nimo.titanesk.com/modules/freecontent/index.php?id=2]
Install the Nimo Codec pack but uncheck ffdshow under “DirectShow Filters”
Install the ffdshow alpha.
You should be good for Xvid, DivX, etc. If you’ve got something less common like VP3, those codecs are also in the Nimo pack and you should install them too.
Do NOT, under any circumstances, download the Nimo codec pack. It breaks things. Use one of the many tools available to find out which codecs a file uses and then get them individually.
Yeah, stay away from codec packs. You should however try installing ffdshow, it’s quite good (uses less CPU when playing DivX movies, and faster seeking too).
Well, downloading it doesn’t hurt. It’s only when you try to install it…
Also, never, ever, ever install WMP 9, because it breaks things worse than any codec pack ever will. And, while codec packs are at least theoretically removable, you need to do a god-damned fucking system restore (!) to get rid of WMP 9.
Bah, just because you have had some problems with it doesn’t mean it’ll bork everyone elses system. WMP9 works great for me.
Also, i need to say this again to everyone: Download ffdshow (grab the latest alpha). It’s great, it includes Xvid and a playback filter thingy (or something) that makes playing DivX movies use less CPU, and also gives you better seeking.
As for reinstalling DX9, AFAIK you can’t really do it. The installer will detect DX9 already installed and will just decide that everything is in order. It only installs files when it detects outdated versions.
