MS Buys Github

This deal was rumored over the weekend, but wow, it escalated. All the talk was $2 billion. Announced deal is almost 4 times that much.

$2 million? I thought GitHub had been valued at five?

Their last valuation was in 2015 at $2 billion, which is probably why all the $2 billion talk had been occurring.

Well, Minecraft is still around…

MS is a different beast under Nadella.

Minecraft and LinkedIn were his calls, and both are doing well.

MS stock is at an all-time high, and they surpassed Google’s market cap last week.

I prefer this thread because it won by 3 minutes.

I feel like my techbuddies are gonna be pissed about this.`

Really? LinkedIn revenue is up, according to the latest financials, but they’ve boosted costs as well. The operating loss is up to $805m. I don’t know what their forecasts were, though.

Moving to gitlab is the nerd version of #deletefacebook. Everybody will bitch, but nobody will actually do it.

I basically think this will be fine. And if not, it’s not like Github does anything so special. Everybody used them because they burned through their investment dollars to provide great service for free.

I think this will be fine too. I know here at work they weren’t all-in for Github, so I’m wondering how this will shake out. We seem to be in bed with MS for everything else, it wouldn’t surprise me if this actually influenced some of those GitHub detractors towards it now.

I’m okay with this. Microsoft has been better and better about open source in the last few years.

I’m willing to give Nadella the benefit of the doubt here, so I’ll wait and see.
