I just can’t see paying $1400 to $1800 for a phone. Two screens or not. SSD or not.

Clearly you don’t possess a sophisticated soul with a love for power, speed, and beauty.
You ingrate. Panos said he made these devices for you, specifically. And for everybody, yes, but also you. How dare you deny his soulful brown eyes their due?

The Verge agrees the Surface Studio Laptop looks deeply silly.
Yikes, $1800 for Duo 2 512Gb and no phone trade-in? DoA.
And just like that, the 512 GB obsidian is already out of stock, lol.

I actually really like the idea of a screen that folds forwards like that, but it makes no sense to me to put it in such a chonky device. I guess they’re imagining some art based workflow, but like you say it’ll only sell in tiny numbers.
For me, the i5/16/256 is probably enough (although replacing my SP7 would be too profligate even for me). They really soak you on the i7 and SSD upgrade. Not that the device is cheap anyway.
The nice thing is the SSD is now replaceable, so get the cheapest i5/16 you can find and upgrade the drive later.

Another really nice change in the SP8, yeah. It’s just a hatch on the back for a M.2.
Yep, this is where I’m at, too. Though as I mentioned before, I can’t afford one right now. Perhaps next year when they’re on sale or via Costco. Though having a mobile power supply that can run/recharge one makes the low-power version less necessary. But still, as mentioned, the upgrade to i7 is a big jump in price.

The one thing I love about these is the removable SSD.
When I got my new Asus Zephyrus M16 (which makes you appreciate Microsoft’s superb build quality, it feels so toy-like after using solid, thick metal Surface devices for all those years when I worked at MS), I loved that I could just open it up and drop in a second SSD.
That’s really weird. My ex has a Surface Laptop 2, and my girlfriend has a Surface Laptop 3, both Core i5 models, and both get all-day battery life and performance (for Office/web stuff) is fine at default power settings. I wonder if it’s a heat/throttling issue with the i7?
The SP8 i5s are no longer fanless

I’m not dropping $1800 on a phone, but the Duo 2 (before reviews) is very seductive.
I’m with @stusser on the Surface line as a general use computer. It’s a pairing of a mediocre tablet and, because of the keyboard, a mediocre laptop. It does have certain use cases that can make it a great fit, but I’ll take an iPad and a laptop, which will cost less combined, over a Surface.
I support some environments that do a lot of on site measurements for building out office space, and those field coordinators love the Surface.
Ok, I’ll ask the idiot question. If you replace the SSD how do you reinstall Windows?
Windows Media creation tool and make a USB installer
Thanks. That’s what I figured but it has been ages since I’ve had to reinstall Windows on a machine. New install sure but not a reinstall.
