MTV's Spider-Man

MTV has put out a Spider-Man cartoon, after two episodes it looks pretty good.
It picks up right after the movie, Spider-Man is still hated by the police and Harry Osbourne, they’re all still in college, and MJ still has the hots for Spidey. (though the time frame in Spider-Man: Crappy Movie was very weak, were they in college?) They also decided to go with the stupid fucking ‘built in’ spider slingers, something even I find lame
It’s mostly either computer animation complete with awkward character movement, or cell shading complete with awkward character movement. And NONE of the characters look like their movie counterparts (IE Peter Parker lacks stupid-ass lips, Mary Jane isn’t hideous, and Osbourne looks like he should instead of a no face nobody. Though the new Lizard looks like the new Godzilla)

Let’s see…Oh, they didn’t try to ‘cool’ the show up, there’s hardly any awkward slang, no swearing, and nothing is ‘XXXTreme!!!1’ I find that refreshing. They do some cool bullet time with Spider-Man’s spider sense, and he does manage to garner a chuckle or two with his lame jokes. People do die and there is blood, but nothing gratuitous, I think we can guarantee at least one costume ripping fight per episode (thanks Superman  )

Unfortunately the bullet time effects leave little room for plot in each half hour episode, everything is explained well and there aren’t any holes, it’s just very thin. But I’m gonna chalk that up to the powers that be allowing us a bit of credit for knowing the basic Spidey story.

Basically it’s the Spider-Man cartoon from the 90’s, prettied up and made better. Fridays on MTV.

Aw, man, it’s already started? You couldn’t have posted BEFORE two episodes aired?

Bad Cookiepants! Bad! No cookie for you.

Actually, I’m not giving cookies to someone who calls himself cookiepants anyway.

You’d rather he went around pantsless? Freak.

Too late.
But it’s MTV, it’s not like they have to clutter up their schedule with videos or anything, it’ll be on multiple times.

I liked it.

The music is … different … It’s almost odd for it not to be as relatively close to the original cartoon’s theme as the others over the years have been.

The cel-shading has potential, though, and I figure if the series is around for any length of time, the animators will learn what works and what won’t, and improve as time progresses.

The ‘organic web-shooters’ doesn’t bother me in the least, so I must be a heretic.

Overall, it’s of course not perfection, but it is an improvement over recent Spider-Man cartoons.

That statement breaks my heart.

Does it stay true to the comics at all, cause that new X-men one does’nt and has oh so horrible art.

Hang on, kids. I’m about to attempt an innovative new forum gameplay mechanic. Choose Your Own Reply:

If you object because the built-in web thingies are different than what’s in the comic book, click here.

If you object because they’re “unrealistic”, click here.

Does it really matter? He’s still shooting webs, what’s the big deal? Stan Lee doesn’t mind, why should you?

How is it realistic that a high-school/college/whatever kid invents something that ridiculous? It’s just as absurd as the explanation they give in the movie.

In the comic books Green Goblin invents them for spiderman, and then he goes loopy and thats how he knows who spiderman is.

Cathy there are a dozen or so more subtle ways to pad your post count, I suggest the old ‘accidently hit the post button 600 times’ excuse.

As it is I just hate that this one development invalidate the 5,000 storylines and plot points that rely on the web shooters running out of fluid. Or Peter not having the money for fluid. Or the shooters being proof of his scientific genius.

Phenom: that must be the new homoerotic adventures of Spider-Man, I’m talking old school, those were the best. HATE the new one that started everything over again.

Well, i admit that i was never THAT into spider-man, but thats how i remebered it.

I’m presenting you people with new paradigms in forum posting and all you can do is call post count padding? Years from now internet historians will look back on this thread as the dawn of a new age, is that really how you want to be remembered? As a naysayer?

Plus, think of it this way. Instead of invalidating old story lines, this method opens up the possibility for a bunch of new stories, Captain Pessimistpants.

Now hold on just one second, i am a Internet Historian, and i seriously doubt it will even be considered for the prestigous award of Thread of the dawn of a new age.

See, personally, I always felt that it was an overused technique to wring drama out of a situation when the writer couldn’t think of anything better. The “Oh no! Spider-man is falling from a building! Did he use up the last of his web fluid? Or does he happen to have a spare capsule in his tights?” situations.

It’s kind of like Superman, an incredibly overpowerful being, having Kryptonite, so that writers who couldn’t come up with a more interesting plot setup for any conflict, could simply have him weakened by a few hits of the green stuff to even him up with whatever opponent he faced.

… or Adam Sessler and chocolate fudge on X-Play.

I agree.

It’s like being in a drinking competition with someone, to see who can drink the most, where you alternate choosing shots. It’s a cheap way out to deliberately order a specific drink the other person can’t hold down, like tequila, straight vodka or whatever.

I have no idea what Jakub just said.

Look, I said years from now. Give it some time. It’s not history yet, the ink on the post isn’t even dry.

Like what for example? ‘Oh no I’m wearing sweat bands on my arms, can I get them off in time???’

Peter Parker in the movie looked like any other shy loser, there, that’s him in a nutshell. In the comics he was a shy loser with an amazing scientific gift, this is conveyed by his ability to fabricate the web fluid (the knowledge of the ingrediance needed he gained from the spider) and his ability to create the completely unique and vastly advanced web shooters. Without this personality trait he’s just another poor shlub no one likes. Much like Cathcart. Would you want Cathcart to get his own comic? Well…would you!!!

Did you guys see the same show as me? Because the one I was watching was absolutely godawful. Peter wears three skin-tight spandex shirts at the same time, and has such witty lines as “What’s up with Dolce and Gabanna?” How positively hip of him.

The cel-shading looks like absolute crap. The movement is stiff as hell, particularly when someone is talking or using their hands. The villains come out of nowhere with no backstory or believable motivation.

The first episode is about a kid who gets bullied by the frat he wants to join. He tries to kill himself by walking into a neon sign, but ends up gaining magical electric powers instead. He’s listed as Electro in the credits, but he’s so completely different from the comic book character that it’s barely worth mentioning. Within five minutes of walking into the magical sign, he has discovered and mastered his powers and begins using them to get revenge on the frat boys. His weakness is touching the ground, which makes sense from a scientific standpoint, but is still pretty lame.

Also, in both of the episodes that I saw (the first two), the villains disintegrated at the end, for no apparent reason. I think Stripperella might actually be better than this steaming hunk of dreck.
