Just shuffled it for an hour while mowing the lawn and trimming the cherry tree out front. The first few songs didn’t grab me but then along came Clover and I was hooked. Extreme Village Green vibes in that one. Then the Lou Reed-ish Oh Angie with that awesomely earnest guitar solo midway through. And, of course, I loved the tale of Christine playing his flute in the boy’s locker room during football practice. “He’d wish he was Miss April with the stockings on.”
The band I kept hearing throughout was The Essex Green. So much the same vocal style. Always fun to plug in the bands who influenced the bands I love, so thanks for doing that… yet again!
Never quite came to terms with A Trick of the Tail. It felt like a “what are we going to do with ourselves now”? kind of album, though I quickly soured on pop-era Genesis. I did see them at the Berkeley Theater on the “Tail” tour. Also a weird hybrid, with playing a boatload of Gabriel-era songs. Worth it for being shook by the vibration of Rutherford’s Moog pedals on Supper’s Ready, and for the double drum kits (with Chester Thompson) when Collins wasn’t out front singing. And for Hackett, duh.
No idea this even existed: Gorkys Zygotic Mynci doing a song with fellow Welshman John Cale.
(If you’d like to sing along…)
