My Computer is Haunted!

I disabled the wireless card and it still beeps.

Vaguely related story: for about a year after I got my Nexus 4, when I set it down, sometimes it would make a chirp sound, unlike any of my notifications. It didn’t happen all the time, it didn’t have anything to do with the orientation in which I set the phone down, and I had no idea what it could possibly be.

Eventually, I worked it out. In my wallet, I used to keep a St. Petersburg metro card as a souvenir from my time in Russia, and that card had an NFC chip inside so the turnstiles could read it. If I set my phone down next to my wallet with the NFC card on the bottom, or if I set my phone down on top of my wallet with the NFC card on top, my phone tried to read it and failed: hence the disappointed chirp. Otherwise, no sound.

Found this suggestion for attempting to isolate what’s causing windows audio ‘beeps’ using Process Monitor:

Start up Process Monitor and disable all of the logging except for File System Activity(all but one of the buttons on the far right part of the toolbar should be deselected). Now, clear the capture window (Edit -> Clear Display) and if you can force the noise to happen. If not, sit and wait until it does happen(you may want to clear every 30 seconds or so if it gets too noisy).

After you hear the noise, stop capturing(File -> Capture Events), and search(Edit -> Find) for .wav. Locate any reference to the default beep sound file. That should lead you the process that accessed the file and caused the sound.

Do you take this for an “error” beep?

So after reading Fishbreath’s story maybe it’s something in your pockets or on your wrist. Short of stripping naked try removing all electronics/metal like you are preparing to go through airport security and see if that makes a difference. I keep thinking it’s like something going out of bluetooth range or something.

"To banish audio demon, follow step:

  1. Ignite seven candle
  2. Pray to Benzaiten, Goddess of Music
  3. Benzaiten will banish audio demon to eternal suffering
  4. Try [stand up] again

If you fail banishing of audio demon, you failure. Much dishonor of family name. Suggest immediate death by Seppuku."

I don’t get any .wav file links. This is the output when it goes off:

OK! Thanks for the process monitor mono, and for everyone else’s advice. After guessing this was an audio problem I moved the powered speakers to the top of the computer instead of in front of my monitor, and the beep goes away! The speakers must be sensing the sound or motion and sending a signal to the computer, or the jack is too sensitive and turning the audio off and on again. Freakiest thing I’ve ever seen. Problem solved.

Still buying a new computer. :)

Glad you found a way to curtail it. Still…weird.

It’s tricking you into thinking you have solved the problem. Actually when you mentioned that the speakers pick up radio when the computer is off, that actually sort of suggests there is some kind of speaker error, bad shielding going on.

Atleast you don’t need to move to my next recommendation, which would be to try wearing a tinfoil helmet ;)

EM fields are weird old things.

Weird Old Things sounds like a Lovecraft-themed Etsy store.

It could have been something like that, Cuthulu is everywhere.

Best not to misspell The Great Old One’s name, Zak. Tin foil won’t protect you from His wrath. ;)

I thought it safer to not get it’s attention?

Too late now…

The One you’re not supposed to mention by name is Hastur…

…shit.

Well damn. The best mysteries are the ones that remain unsolved!
And here I was all ready to subscribe to your Youtube channel for updates.

I wish my wife was into Lovecraft (well, and crafts too), just to make this Etsy store.

Meanwhile in China they are trying to figure out why their in-speaker motion sensor is sending beeps when it loses track of the user.

you mean at Microsoft right? ;)
