A KCBS news helicopter spotted what appeared to be a missile traveling through the sky northwest of Catalina Island, about 35 miles west of Los Angeles.

Was it a bunch of crazy ghouls in a 50s era rocket?
I think it’s a small propeller plane, but I didn’t study it carefully.
Well, it should be the exact place to do it, “Oh, just another launch from Vandenberg AFB, yawn”. But most SoCal residents still, to this day, will look up in the sky at a rocket going hell-for-leather into the stratosphere, and say “What’s that?” The L.A. Times routinely runs a story as to what the funky vapor trail is that everyone say the previous day to satisfy inquiries.
In any case, another vote for Spectre.

Well the idea would be that the test missile was so far off target that it ended up near LA. So not only do you have your super secret test being revealed, you would have to admit that it almost ended up landing in the middle of the second largest city in the county.
Another possibility is that it was an accidental firing from a navy ship or something.
Either way, I can see where they might want to just be quiet about it.

2:27 p.m.: NORAD added a bit more detail to its statement, saying, now, that “from all indications this was not a launch by a foreign military.”
Course it would be just like the socialists at NPR to lie.
That doesn’t make the slightest bit of sense unless you take this as testing the political will in the US to face off militarily against China. The idea that China is lobbing SLBMs off a major American city without causing an international crises, indeed, with apparently the complicity of the US government as it attempts to, i dunno, save face, seems extremely improbable.
That was a launch. It had to come from close to LA. It’s not like they shot an ICBM off from the south seas somewhere which came looping down next to Catalina and then shot up into the sky again.
My guess is some kind of colossal screwup in the Ronald Reagan carrier group, which I think is supposed to be in the area rescuing stranded tourists, but whatever… Maybe, you know… Thunderbirds are go!
Just a jet contrail filmed from the air at an odd angle as the sun was setting. Not rocket exhaust.
At least they’re not claiming it was a weather balloon!
